Can you paint fabric headboards?

Cream cotton sheen headboards and would like to change colour to match room after redecorating.

Hi Joan, I’ve never tried it, but I’ve seen articles where people have painted soft furnishings with Fabric Paint. The one below apparently keeps the fabric soft after use, but there are several brands. Hobby Craft may be a good stockist if they are open.

Look for old wood privacy fence boards cast offs or placed at the curb or better yet call your local fence companies or installers and request that they either save it for you or let you know where the old boards are being disposed of. You can usually find a few boards still with enough meat on their bones to veneer a small space with. Use them to veneer an accent wall or a headboard as you might. These could also be re-sawn in half edgewise by a band saw for more of a true veneer. Save the scraps as test pieces for your finish choices.

Hey Tani. That's a shame you haven't found one yet. I finally found window shutters tall enough this week after month of searching ( and on the same day of emailing for a quote to have them made typically!) I do think the upholstered frame would be relatively quick and easy? In terms of the door, if you go for a single door, I would pop a bit of architrave on top. I Think the silver leaf could be very expensive and the delicacy of it may be at odds with the thickness of the door ( or there again that could actually make it work!). I quite like the idea of double doors but how tall is the ŵall? I think if you go for that option I would personally have a very distressed effect with white and grey paint, something like the attached ( hopefully less work). Can you varnish over chalk paint??

Hi! I have used wax (Johnsons Durosil) & satin wayer-based varnish over home made chalk paint (calcium carbonate version) & both worked out well. I love the feel & look of the wax - it's lovely to touch - but decided on a satin varnish for a hall table for durability. Having bags, keys, etc dumped on a wax finish could have it looking tatty in no time. Besides I have two cats that perch (& launch themselves) on it often. I'd definitely use a hard wax finish otherwise.
