Can I put a range cooker in a basement kitchen ?

Hi we have just moved house and there are 4 steps down into the kitchen. The entrance door is straight off the road. Can a range cooker come 'flat packed' and built in situ as I am concerned that it will be be too big/heavy to get down the steps has anyone got experience of this thanks for you advice in advance Catherine

I assume the company you’ve ordered from are installing it? I’m sure it will be fine, maybe give them a ring. The range should fit down the steps sideways?

Our utility room is in our basement and the previous people installed a range oven in there. That would have come down a lot of stairs (with a turn at the end) so I’m sure it will be fine

Hi, I recently designed a kitchen where the range cooker was located in the chimney breast for clients as part of a side return extension, there are a couple of things to look out for: - Is the opening size of the chimney enough for the cooker with tolerance on either side. - The chimney breast will most likely not have an opening height suitable for the height of the cooker so it may need to be raised. Check this dimension and also the clear height that the extractor unit needs to be above an electrical or gas hob. - On raising the opening height the contractor needs to insert a new lintel but we also found the chimney to be completely solid inside and not hollow as we thought so there was no room for the casing of the extractor unit. The contractor basically had to rebuild the chimney breast to suit the requirements for fitting in the extractor unit and having a higher opening which was time consuming and fiddly as we wanted to re-use the Victorian brickwork and have an exposed brick chimney. The end result looked great but I would advise to proceed with caution, it is not as straightforward as it looks or maybe our chimney breast was uniquely challenged. Perhaps you could use the mantle elsewhere - even faux fireplaces can make for a nice focal point if you need a feature in your newly repositioned living room? I also think the way a house 'flows' is one of the most important elements of how well a space 'fits' it's owner. You've got to make it work for you and the way you like to live, if that means switching some of the rooms round then absolutely go ahead. Especially if it's going to be a long term or forever home.

To make it look right, It's got to fit proportionally so have some chunky cupboards either side, don't put it at the end with island behind. Well I‘ve also had a fridge freezer etc put down there. They‘re not quite as heavy but not far off
