kitchen tiles and shelving advice.

Hi all!

I’m trying to make my kitchen feel a little less cookie cutter and soulless.

I need to tile the backsplash as it is currently only painted with water soluble paint.

I also thought that if I removed the cupboards on the far right (I don’t need them) and placed some shelves it would look a bit more interesting.

I’d love your thoughts on tiles, which style and if I should remove the metal stove backsplash and if I remove the cupboards how high up I should tile.

I have attached some pics of the kitchen/ lounge, some tiles I like and some inspo for the shelves.

I do think there are a lot of units, but if you wanted to remove any it should be the pair right in the middle as it would open up the space. I actually think it could make it look worse than it currently does if you were to remove the 2 on the far right!

Sorry somehow doesn't sound right at all, if I would be the tiler I would have told you previously to fit the mosaic there are problems with it...not after; still belive he could have done a better job. sometimes tillers work with 'funny' products, in that case there are little adjustment they should make ...if they have a bit of experience and desire, if you know what I mean. Ask him what he would have done in his own house, would it be accepting the job as it is now? he probably say he would have never choosen such a mosaic design... than you can ask him why he let you fit such thing,....he'll soon realize he made a mistake and should rectified it. good luck!

Hi, How about a light grey or maybe even a smoky grey glass splahback, to complement the flecks in the worktop. As you will have wood effect flooring, this will instantly add warmth to the room. I also like the above idea of using hexagonal tiles, adds some interest without detracting from the worktop. You could also look at subtle marble effect tiles.

Hello, considering installing these floor tiles in our new kitchen: https://bit.ly/2TYNSkG The sample I’ve received looks good but always hard to know how it would look in the final project. We like the concrete ‘look’ but I would really like to hear people’s experiences of using such tiles or similar: Does it ever look tacky/ aka.....it’s ‘mock concrete/wood/porcelain’ etc How has the quality fared: this would be a high traffic area for us so what have people’s experiences been/would you need to install special underlay, etc The price seems too good to be true so I’m dubious/very keen to hear from people who have used! I think it looks great. You could remove the right hand wall cupboard but why reduce the workspace? I would love to have more workspace! I think it could be brightened and jazzed up by tiles. The ones you’ve chosen are a lovely shape but the colours are a bit dull? The very dark ones will make the area darker. Looking at your table and chairs I think you like colour? Here’s a few I think may go really well, some colourful and some plain. I think it’s better to remove the stainless steel backsplash if you tile the rest.

Hi Lisa,

I agree with Sonia (above comment) I would not remove the work surface space as it gives you space either side of the cooker to prepare/serve up.

I love the shelving you have picked out as it brings a new dimension/texture to the space.

Looking at your dining chairs you are not afraid of colour so I would pick a colour/tile that makes you smile and lay in an interesting pattern formation (herringbone/basket weave) to bring some colour and texture to the space.

It's quite a small space and kitchens always have clutter so I would keep it really simple. The dark tiles with dark grout would be my choice, simply because the paler grey ones may look too similar but slightly off with the cupboards. What is the difference in colour between the darks, is one warmer? I would tile with a dark grout up the to height of the extractor. Another option is these Hoxton stoneware ones from Mandarin Stone which are stunning and variegated in colour.

I wouldn’t go with the lighter tiles, maybe the navy would work (although might choose something a lighter personally) but I love the Hoxton ones coulourhappy posted. if you remove the RHS wall cupboards I’d make sure the shelves balance with the remaining wall units. I would definitely remove the SS splash back (otherwise it would visually cut the kitchen in half?) and personally would also remove the upstand. I’d also tie the whole wall. A single shelf under the raised sink units might balance it further?

Thank you all for the help, maybe you are right and I was being a bit too conservative with the colours. I am going to paint the table so that the top is a bit more muted (it was a pick up from a local charity shop) but I will def keep the legs blue.

I am definitely not going to reduce workspace, the books on the right will likely end up on shelves and the microwave is being donated. So there will be more space all around.

For the tiles, I am going to look for some brighter colours, would you tile all the way up to the top of the existing cabinets on the right? (once they are removed)

Hi Lisa

I would tile up to the height of the exiting cabinets. If you go all the way to the ceiling it won't look balanced against the other side of the cooker hood.

I would remove the upstand and then tile up to the bottom of the cupboards including up to the slimmer cupboards above the sink. Then remove the steel splashback and tile up to the extractor. It’s amazing the variety of tiles that have been recommended on here, we all have such diverse tastes! I hope you find something your love 😊

I like those Sonia! What colour are your cabinets? Are they grey or green, it's hard to tell with the lighting and my monitor.

The cabinets are beige-ey and shiny. I am pretty unhappy with the colour but I am not sure if you can paint over the finish..
