Garden office - paint and décor help

Hi all, I've had a South facing garden room built which I am going to use as my office.
I'm really struggling to pin down what colour I paint the inside, the building overlooks green fields and mountains.
My desk is an antique mahogany desk and I really like the paint in the second last picture but as the room is approx 144 sqft or 16 sqm - is it going to make the room feel very small?
Aside from the desk I am going to get a Fama moon chair which I can't other until I decide my wall colour and some small amount of storage - possibly dark wood too.

Hi Niamh,

What a delightful little space! In my opinion, the colour you're leaning towards won't make it feel small, as long as your furniture isn't too big for the space and accessories are pared back it'll make it feel like a cosy nest. Another colour to consider might be a sage green. I'm a big fan of connecting the outside to the inside, especially in garden rooms and spaces that open out onto gardens. Breakfast Room Green by Farrow & Ball is a great colour (see attached pic) and it also makes a great backdrop to houseplants, which will thrive in your South-facing space.

Hi Vivienne, Just wading in with my two pence worth! My immediate thought of what you could put on your wall in your first picture of the table with the plants on it is, artwork or mural of a Japanese garden. Everything about Japanese gardens are about equal and opposites, ying and yang if you like. The effect is calming and reaches into the soul to soothe the stresses away. Probably very necessary when you've been working hard and need a break or some downtime. My other immediate thought to your second picture with the corner sofa is, a seaview or something showing an expanse of water or body of water. If we all had a choice to live within eyesight of the sea or body of water, how many of us would say 'Yes!'. Again, another subject of relaxation for the soul. If any of these subjects are of any interest, I'm sure you can source the exact artwork, mural, poster, canvas whatever you decide it's gonna be for these chosen spaces, but here's a glimpse at what I have in mind when I talk of seaview. Hi Karis, It would be good to see a plan of the room as the photos can distort perspective a little. I agree with you, the room does look a little off kilter. It's too heavy to the right of the fireplace -to balance it out you need something to the left (of the fireplace).- reflecting the height and width of the bookcase. One way you could achieve this is by using paintings or some kind of wall art above and slightly behind a chair. (small relaxing arm/reading chair would be ideal. A floor light in this corner even, if its only a plug in floor spot light will make a difference. Option A will also feel a little more balanced, but also a very tiny bit like the reception of some private practice. If the desk isn't too big, can you try turning the desk slightly diagonally into the room? Alternatively, position the desk where you had it originally and create a picture wall full of all the photos you love behind it (on the door wall). You will also need either a desk light either positioned on the desk or on the wall to give you the lighting you need, making your desk a pleasant place to work at. I like MATH's idea to go dark, don't think you have to paint the door surrounds though. Dark colours sort of disappear, and it looks great as a background for plants too. Could you add windows, either flanking the doors or as in the example below? Depending on how you want to place furniture. The more light, the larger it seems on the inside. And I saw this example, with trellis on the sides instead of solid walls.

Rather strange that the garage doors face into the garden, so you would have to drive over the garden to get to them! I have a garage at the end of my garden but the garage door is facing out the back where there is a road. I think, eventually you could update the garages by removing the old doors, bricking up the wide doorways and just put in normal doors, get a new roof and then turn it into a gym, office or whatever you like. But this will come at a cost and it may well be cheaper to knock it all down and put up a shed, or a cabin. Our electric garage door cost just under £1500, just to give you a guide price. This is my garden/garage - a narrower but similar style. It is also surprising how much creating a garden can cost. You could take up the paving and create a sitting area nearer the house, then grass the rest until you decide on your final design?

Fantastic workroom in an even more fantastic setting. 👌

I love your colour choice and the style you’re going for.

I wouldn’t worry about it feeling small. Even if its ‘cozy’, you still have the grand view out so I’m sure it will never feel claustrophobic.

Btw, it’s always easier to adapt wall colours to furniture than vice versa.

What a lovely outlook, you are so lucky. The terracotta wall colour is lovely and would create a cosy den, but my first thought was green - a lovely calming shade which would blend beautifully with the view, but I see it has already been suggested! Here’s a few more ideas
