Soft furnishings - how to choose a mix of cushions /armchairs advice!
Hi there, this is my first post and would be really grateful for advice on how I get the right furniture and cushions for my living room - recently moved in and renovating...
Im looking to add two arm chairs and the sofa cushions, and possible window seat too.
however I’m really struggling with what other colours and textures I can bring in. How to mix and match cushions -should you get them custom made? how many for the sofa? i Don’t want it all to match, it’s a country cottage and want to include different textures, patterns. I like the style of Ben Pentreath - just really stuck at the moment!

Comments (63)Hi all-I'm back:). Happy New Year! After a much needed holiday and some down-time, I am back on track! I decided to postpone the redecoration of my office till week after next so that I could take my time in choosing paint colours. I ordered 10 tester colours from Dulux and have been playing with them at work this morning. It's quite incredible how colours on your computer screen look nothing like they do when rolled on white paper or your wall! I'm so pleased I got these tester samples. My plan was to paint my 3 main walls (the only walls that will be painted) a light lilac with the false wall (below my window) a darker grey. But having seen the colours on the wall I could probably get away with a light grey for my 3 main walls and a darker lilac for the false wall-ledge. I want the false wall to stand out and be approx. 2 shades darker than the main walls. Having spoke to Dulux on the phone the woman advised against certain colours as they would make the room feel "closed in". Because it's a small space I do need to be careful not to use too dark a colour for the main walls. I've decided I'm keeping my purple blind so am basing my paint colour choice around the blind, and the grey chairs that I will be ordering from IKEA...attached/uploaded somewhere earlier in this thread:). I've already eliminated a couple of the tester colours simply because I find them too "baby pink"-as if for a newborn baby girl's room (i.e., Lavender Blossom=bottom colour on left) & Soft Montelimar 4=bottom colour on right). I don't want anything too girlie-most of my clients are men:). I've painted 5 colours on the left and 5 colours on the right-hopefully you can make out top to bottom, etc. I like Violet White (the top colour on the left) as a possibility for the 3 main walls, or Goose Down (top left), with Lavender Quartz (4th down on left), Grey Steel 2 (4th down on right) or Chic Shadow (2nd from top on left) as possible colours for my accent false wall (below the window). I love Lavender Quartz but fear it may be too dark for the 3 main walls. So this is where I'm at at the mo! Comments (32)😂 You're welcome I'm just putting your ideas together in one place! I used the walnut table but as I said before I think it may need a rug against the dark floor but see what you think. The rug size may be do'able (8x10), you would need to tape it out when you're in the house so it doesn't encroach on the bar stool area. I have zero photoshop skills so just chose a rug I could edit in but just to give you an idea (Although obviously the table is the wrong way round!). Maybe have the clock over the table to zone it and bounce some light and some marble and brass shelves would look great by the breakfast bar?...See More

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoGorgeous room. Do you have any photos of Ben Pentreath rooms you really like? Only some are quite pared back and others use a riot of pattern and colour! I agree linen would look beautiful. I think geometrics would work with oriental style and ikat. I’ve added these Florence Broadhurst cushions (a bit cheaper than BP!) and Pooky are quite good for ikat prints. And I’ve just added an Oka lampshade which I’ve got myself which would work (also comes in ochre)
An upholstered footstool could work too (not suggesting this fabric) or a modern glass and brass table

3 years agoBit of a budget blower but wondering if you did want to move the sofa could you have the Samsung tv angled somewhere in the left corner?
im not sure how deep the alcoves are but could you add shelves leaving room at the front for lamp, flowers etc? On the right you could do shelves with a log store at the bottom.
are there any cushions etc that you love that people could help with complementary patterns? You could also look at fabric collections and they’ll do the job for you!

3 years agoGorgeous room! I think navy/teal would be a good colour for the armchairs, something close to the blue in the rug. Not an exact match but similar tone. I’m rubbish at cushions so can’t advise there, but Minnie is good at that! Here’s some ideas

3 years agoIs the red chair staying in there? I love the cyanotypes, I bought myself a kit for doing them which is very exciting. I think Ben Pentreath's style is eclectic and slightly clashy if that makes sense, sort of meant to look thrown together but is in fact very carefully curated. I like his use of dirty pinks, he has used a colour called Caddie which is a caramel colour quite a bit. He tends to use colour on the walls which helps to ground the variety of other colours he uses. For example if you look at the cover of the book (available on Amazon) the drab wall colour and sisal flooring makes the bright colours really stand out and provides a really good backdrop. Might be worth treating yourself to the book?

It’s by Jane Churchill and it’s called Rossini. I just think it pulls together the colours of your sofa and armchair perfectly. It’s from the Samba collection and there would be plenty of other designs which would work with what you already have. Love the warm colours.

3 years agoWhat a beautiful room! Can the yellow/orange sofa be switched to the adjacent wall? I’d then have the red armchair in front of the window alcove with a throw and add a tufted cushion pad to the window seat in a linen that matches the wall colour.
I feel like the alcoves could maybe take some colour. Maybe a plaster/ salmon pink? Or a wallpaper with pinks or blues/green in the pattern. I’d go for complementary colours to your sofa for the cushions - so blues, purples, pinks, dark greens.
Maybe a woo midcentury armchair where the red one is currently. In a dark or olive green leather?

3 years agoLoulou the armchairs were just images I found and I can’t find them now! To be honest every sofa co is doing teal and navy velvet armchairs so not hard to source. This one is from Baker & Stonehouse and the second is from John Lewis.
