Would this work please? Need to have a separate bath and shower

We’ve downsized and have a very small bathroom. It was renovated poorly with low quality materials and has lots of problem. There is no mechanical extraction, the bath is plastic, thin and slippery, has an electric shower which keeps flowing hot then cold, lots of boxing in, radiator is undersized and the room is freezing.....

We would like to create a wet floor shower area and wondered what your thoughts are with the layout that I’m thinking about.

- the bath under the window (1500 x 700)

- the wc changed to a wall hung less projecting depth

- the door removed and a sliding barn door installed outside

- narrower basin in the corner with cupboard below and mirrored cupboard above

- quadrant bespoke glass doors in the corner

Please let me know your thoughts.

I don’t think you have the space for a bath and shower. I would either go for luxury walk-in shower or a nice deep bath with shower head over it. Even with a 1500mm bathtub, it only leave 600mm clearance for the toilet, which is not sufficient. I believe regs advice min of 78mm.

For the toilet, you will still need to account for the cistern, can this be sunk into the wall? Alternatively, you could look into a high level cistern.

Personally I wouldn’t put a barn door on a bathroom unless it was well sealed enough not to let steam escape into the adjoining rooms potentially creating humidity problems.

Wumi thanks for the feedback. The boxing behind the bath and loo is 22.5cm deep hence wanting to hang the loo and hide the outlet pipes behind the bath under the window.

I’ll have a look at the building regs re minimum space around the loo, thanks .

The plumbing is all on that side of the room but, subject to moving that, I don't see why not. I had envisaged perhaps a shower where the toilet / sink are, with the bath where it is and toilet / sink on the right hand wall as you come in (the wall not shown in the pic).

You absolutely have room for a wetroom - If everything is splashproof, imagine the shower without the quadrant enclosure, and a tanked floor with a couple of drain points. Try to avoid too much chrome in the splash zone as it watermarks. Bath, basin, loo etc smooth and white with no nooks/crannies for easy wiping down. We have an old school towel rail in ours, next to the shower, and the chrome does watermark so needs the odd polish. here are some pics of our master bathroom. 3m x 2m, admittedly with no loo in it. We could have fitted a loo had we made the shower zone a bit smaller and zoned with a clear screen as suggested above, but were lucky enough to have a separate WC.

Assuming the plumbing can't go all the way into the porch (and runs along the left), I imagined this: Instead of opening up the complete kitchen-dining wall (probably loadbearing), enlarge the current doorway and have a 'window frame' installed to open things up. No separate utility in this though. And is the door on the side the only door to your garden? I've simply added one, though french doors in the dining would most likely add more value. And with some extra cash you could open up the dining-lounge wall too. And close off some of the hallway to gain storage space under+near the stairs.

This is an intriguing problem ! In your original plan, is it the case that the wall end of the bath is wider than the toilet end, or is that just the way the perspective works here ? If so, that is one of the things making the layout looked cramped and 'weird'. How deep a step did you have in mind ? That, too, could make a difference. The problem with steps in bathrooms (those that are designed for 'real' everyday living, not just for a magazine spread) is that they can get wet, and hence slippery - an accident waiting to happen. Careful choice of flooring might help minimise that. Something rubbery, or like hospital bathroom floors. Japanese tubs have been mentioned. I believe there are also 'small' toilets available, and space-saving sinks, for very small spaces, understairs cloakrooms etc...), though I think there's enough room there in the design. (And for the main bathroom, you do need a decent sized sink.) The screens you describe: I would definitely go for a fixed, clear glass one near the towel rail, simply for letting light through, and not feeling further cramped. Alongside the toilet, it might be better to opt for a half-wall screen (illustrated above in Jane's comments) - again, on grounds of not feeling cramped, but also letting maximum light in - you could adorn it with wood battens if you like. How young is the daughter ? How much longer is she going to need bathing as opposed to showering ? Could you have all that room devoted to a large shower enclosure, and keep something temporary to one side (like the old bathtubs hanging on the wall !!), which you could move across to nearer the shower for filling purposes. Once she's old enough, you can dispense with the moveable tub.
