At what point do you hire an interior designer
Comments (21)ksgrant . . . . . I was on a very tight budget, but knew I was going to hit a wall and need a designer consult. I had space plan drawings for my kitchen and used the design services (free w/ cabinet purchase, CAD) to complete the space. I also had very specific inspiration photos that reflected the same perspective as the space, i.e. window placement over sink (light), position of appliances, prep sink. I paid close attention to how I intended to use the space, needed prep space for a least three cooks. I read a lot about the "triangle". Mostly I spent a lot of time with the plans and considering materials in relation to the inspiration photos. For instance, I wanted soapstone but it was out of budget and went with honed black granite to get the same look. Another example is that I wanted the kitchen to have some of the same elements as the old one to reflect the period of the house, so I had venting added to cabinet piece in front of the sink. Houzz was not available at the time, I would have posted some plans/materials here for more input and suggestion. Feel free to email me at tirgoddess.com for any other questions, happy to help. More than anything, take your time and do your research....See MoreInterior Design Software
Comments (8)Do you have Photoshop? If you do you can upload and resize pictures of existing furniture (and even recolour them if, for instance, you are thinking of reupholstering) that way, then drop them in to your room design. SketchUp is free and a lot of people find it the easiest interior design software to use. Have fun!...See MoreBeta Testers Wanted for a Home Design Course
Comments (5)I'm really sorry that you feel like that, Daisy. As far I know, the idea of this website is for people to get ideas, advice, inspiration, and to learn about interior design and home decor. I contribute to Houzz by giving advice to others too. The course I have developed aims to help with the sorts of problems that members of Houzz experience, and that I see on the advice boards regularly. It is therefore highly relevant to the audience here. I value greatly the quality of advice that I give out to others, and this is why I am looking for exactly the sort of people who come to Houzz, to help me to test my course. I would hate to offer an untested product to people, and that is why I am asking people to beta test my course: to make sure that it meets their needs and is genuinely useful. I have had a lot of people apply to be a beta tester already, and so I know that there are many people out there who will see this as a great opportunity. I am not asking for any money, just people's time and feedback for what I hope will become very helpful training for people in the future. I'm sorry that you've taken offence to this....See Moreinterior design choices coupled with other choices in life!
Comments (18)Wow Beano that must make picking holidays tricky! I research holidays for days (have even been known to compile spreadsheets!) so if I added a particular interior style we would never go away! Having said that I appreciate lots of styles. I would say the style is dependant on the architecture but can think of lots of exceptions! There are loads of things I'm not keen on but I dislike Tiffany lamps with a passion for some reason. I tend to prefer less saturated colours for interiors although differ for my wardrobe due to skin and hair colour but do not like lime, aqua and lilac in either. My wardrobe has a LOT of black but also quite a few different colours. I can't really wear white so I had a pale blue wedding dress which was giving my mum palpitations until I put it on. My FIL took the pictures as we got married abroad. He's passionate about photography and showed the pics to a regarded pro and she loved the photos but said the colour was off due to my wedding dress :) Car is chosen on looks and performance (and engine sound!) but colour is important and when we got our previous car, they didn't do our model in a particular blue which we'd fallen in love with so we paid rather a lot to have it sprayed. It sounds mad (more so as I write it) but we sold it for more than enough to cover the deposit on the next car (we lease) so it was all good in the end :) We upgraded the model last time and put in the order for a dark grey over a weekend, come the Monday we'd changed the order for the same blue!...See MoreSonia
