1960s terrace exterior improvements - getting the details right?

Hi, we're doing some facade improvements to our 1960s terrace including moving the door to improve the internal layout and adding a porch. We have some concept designs, but we'd like some advice to get the details right so we modernise but also respect the design of the era.

Any advice on how to select and source the right door, window and cladding would be appreciated. We've been struggling to find a door with a double side light for the opening which is 1.3m wide - it seems we can get a single side light, but not two, however we like the way the double one looks and the way it adds slightly more privacy.

We're also on a budget so any suggestion of how to save money would be great.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I can’t help you with sourcing these things but I thought I would applaud your approach to this- the concept looks great.

I think in your area there will be plenty of examples of unsympathetic updates and hopefully you will inspire more people to do the same.

Have to agree, that looks fantastic and it’s surprising how others could follow upon seeing what you achieve, want to see finished pics if you go through with it

This is what the exterior looks like so far. We have been approved planning permission to extend single storey, front and side With sky lantern. we are set on a flat roof with wildflower and sedum. Considering keeping the tiles. front door will be moved forward and there will be a window on the left. Not sure what the new render should be for the extension? Brick ? Trying to keep all costs down but Still have a Clean and contemporary finish...... I realise now I should have been braver with the windows! Tut tut!!!

Hello Barbara, I do have to say I love the wooden cladding! Definitely take off that glass front porch.. I would also consider wooden window and front door, so you could paint it, however I have just discovered a product that paints plastic so you can then use a coloured paint! I think it would be fabulous to duplicate the wooden half all round.. Take off the glass front porch and see how it looks without one.. Then decide what to do about the stone cladding.. I have to say removing that 1 part alone (porch) is really going to transform your home but I have to say on seeing that wooden cladded part, I'm pretty sold on that! A new drive sounds good and light stone gravel could be nice and perhaps all round.. I would timber the rest and gravel.. Lovely! . : ))

Hi Ben, I am inclined to agree with Design Bi-folds but it is tough when you are in a row like that as it is nice to take into account you surroundings too and not make it stick out like a sore thumb against its back drop.. although sometimes this is what people want. What do you want? Have you looked at the other properties? have any had their windows redone or pulled up the slabs to make way for a garden area at the front? What style do you have in side? If your budget is fairly small I would consider painting the cladding in a contemporary colour and some foliage in the front and especially up the side of the wall would make a great difference to the feel of the property. If it is larger then replacing windows and doors plus creating a small front garden area and if it is even larger then rendering the front with aluminium windows and door is definitely your best option. Wow! Thank you everyone. I am certainly impressed by the potential you’re finding. We didn’t think our little bungalow had it in it! We currently use the conservatory/existing extension as a utility room so seeing that we could still squeeze in a utility in the new floor plan is very appealing. We definitely need to discuss priorities as I think some of these amazing ideas may be beyond our budget when we factor in a dorma and loft conversion to get the much needed third bedroom. Great to see different ideas on the space though and makes us all the more keen to improve the space we have rather than moving house. Thank you for your help.

Wow, great ideas. A friend of mine recently did a similar project. They turned the garage into a bedroom. Her husband did a lot of the work to keep the costs down. Here are the pics, I can ask for details of what materials they sourced if you’d like me to?
