Hi so this is what I had in mind. Although it ideal I think it would be too expensive for now to remove that lone cupboard. So an idea would be; 1. Paint the walls white 2. Paint the cupboards pale grey: http://www.farrow-ball.com/paint/Paint-For-Kitchen-Cupboards 3. Get nice oak laminate floor from Homebase or B&Q 4. It may cost between £200 and £300 to fit the floor with underlay. But totally worth it. 5. Cheap grey sofa (maybe not corner sofa) or second hand sofa, max those dimensions on the plan. I bought two cheap ones from Homebase for our back room and they're totally fine. 6. Farmhouse table with bench / Eiffel chairs 7. Tv bench and side table from ikea 8. I think that you need to leave a wider gap, 30cm is not wide and I think it will look like what it is, ie stopping the units so they don't get in the way of the french doors. I would go with a 60-80cm gap and make a useful feature out of it with floor to ceiling shelving. I've found a picture showing some shelving stepped back from regular depth units, so you get an idea. Another option is to use a rounded base unit if you like them and maybe put a stool or plant in the gap.

I think you've found a way to solve a problem many of us has. Certainly I have - a horrible gap that isn't big enough for another cupboard and is, in the meantime, a major dust-collecting spot. I think coving would make it look rather muddled; I like the sleek look you have already achieved. Filling the strange-shaped gaps will be tricky but a careful carpenter should be able to cut the plinth/cover to fit so it matches. I think it's great.

Yes, your design is lovely indeed! 1. isn't an island but has a whole lot of countertop space, which might come in handy for preparing large family dinners with multiple people. 2. true, the distance is the 'price' for the larger island i guess, besides i like the connection with both dining and lounge without the column blocking the view. 3. both have about 5m countertops, pulling the island somewhat towards the storage would provide more space for stools.
