what is the size of the space added to create the suite?

Good morning Jeanine,

Thank you for visiting our Houzz site and asking us your question. The picture above is the Riccio's project located in Darien, CT. It was designed as a in-law apartment. This particular project was completed about 5 years ago. It is about 400 square feet and includes a crawl space concrete foundation, a modest bedroom, a walk-in closet, a full bathroom (Shower only) and a small hallway leading into the main house.

We are currently back at the Riccio's, working on a new addition project, this time to the rear of their house. We will be adding/extending the lower level area by extending an existing play room and renovating an existing mudroom. We are also working on their main level of the house, extending/adding to the kitchen and family room, (Installing all new kitchen cabinets and tops) and extending the dining room with a new outside deck area. We are fortunate to have clients that continue too have us back for other projects to their home.

Just thought I would update my post as the en suite is *almost finished. Only take 6 months (rolls eyes) and still a bit of cladding above the WC to finish and on the sink unit (same walnut cladding on the front) and of course I have to have a shower screen designed as it won’t take a standard shower door. Such fun. Will take some other angle pics over the weekend once it’s all tidied up and cleaned. Just struggling now with storage!! Only got a shallow space under the sink (25cm deep- 26cm at most) to put some drawers but I can’t find any. Got space on the wc side for a little bench seat with storage under so trying to work out the best colour/style that’s not too twee.

Could you combine bedroom 5 and the toilet to make a family bathroom and then convert the existing bathroom and bed 2 into and en-suite and walk in closet? In my mind less bedrooms would potentially lower resale value but a large en-suite and walk in closet may limit that and be a much more workable solution. Guess it depends on how long you plan to be in the house as if long term I’d focus around your needs than resale value. Hope that helps!

Hey Lee, Just another idea not covered above, without moving the stairs or load-bearing walls (which is obviously super expensive). I wondered if you could move the new WC and utility in your hallway space, using that space also under the stairs. This would then do a similar thing as moving the staircase to open up the space but would leave you with wider rooms rather than narrower ones. I'm also not a fan of long halls as they are a bit of a waste of space. So if I can ever get rid of them I do! I am also not a fan of a WC right off a living/dining space so having this off the hall seems more logical. If you also have the WC in the utility/panatry area your guests have to go into it to get to it, which for me defeats the purpose of having this hidden messy space!!! The doors between spaces can obviously be adjusted, you could also enter the utility from the dining area if preferred but I've seen so many great designs for small utilities/WC's that would be great in that space. Purley going from the thickness of the wall between the dining area and old utility, I assumed it was load bearing, so left it in, but could open it up, or if you want more of a broken plan feel, you could put barn door type dividers in or glass doors to let in light but keep spaces sperate. Depending on how load-bearing the walls are. This should only mean a small stud between WC and utility and then the old utility walls in the new kitchen space. I blocked up the door between the dining room and utltiy but this also could be kept in if you don't mind accessing it from this room. Hope this helps :) Rhiannon
