Shower help - pump?!

We are putting in a big shower in our family bathroom. We have a gravity fed system from the loft. This is brand new so the most up to date it could be.
Our builder says if we want a big fixed shower head we need a pump but I have no idea what this means!
I've been recommended Aqualisa showers as I like the idea of the temperature being set particularly the digital one but no idea on the pump front. Can anyone help please?

Yes I have a shower pump as my water is very low in pressure. It really gives the shower head a boost. They are quite noisy when the shower is turned on. We’ve got ours in the airing cupboard next to the water cylinder but I think they can be put in the loft?

We have a pump in the airing cupboard too. Like Sonia said it is quite noisy but you get used to it!

Agree with ED but if they can’t move it away from the cupboard walls then the next option would be to sound board the cupboard walls themselves to help stop the sound travelling. Ideally you would do both ie separate the pump from the structure, insulate/sound proof around it and then sound board inside the cupboard. Triple layer effect! You can buy sound board, rubber matting and also use an egg carton style foam which rebounds sound as well. Just check first about having to have air flow around the pump

Tani H-S, you are not the only one who has been trying to do their bathroom for one year :-). I realised I have mis-read your post, I thought you were having a shower door as well rather than a just a fixed shower screen, in that case, it doesn't make sense to have the separate shower hose on the opposite side of the fixed shower head. How about having the separate shower hose and outlet come out of the same wall as the fixed shower head ( pipes behind same wall ) but with the outlet as near as possible to the corner of where the short wall and long wall meet and then have an additional 'hook' on the long wall ( like julesbird2014 ) so that when you are washing the dog, you can move the shower head to the side hook and you won't get wet when you put the water on as the water will spray away from you towards the glass. When you are shampooing the dog, you can put the shower head on the side hook rather than having to reach over the dog and put the head on the hook of where the fixed shower head is or leave it on the shower floor which means the water will spray everywhere unless you turn the water off. Keep the controls on opposite side of fixed shower head ( stud wall ). Are you sure a 1.1m shower screen is sufficient to prevent water coming out? I was told by several shops that it was best to have a 1.2m screen if having walk in shower and minimum 1.7m long shower. I know space could be limited to 1.6m hence the reason for a 1.1m shower screen but if screen is too short then it would be really annoying if you find that water keeps coming out after you have used it. Have you considered looking into having frameless sliding doors instead? Sometimes the glossy photos look amazing with fixed shower screens but if they are too short, it's not practical.

Regardless of what finish you choose, the thing with wet UFH is that it relies on heat building up in and being stored in the floor slab. You don’t really ever turn it off in the winter, you just set the room thermostats for different temperatures at different times of the day. In the summer you just set the thermostat to frost setting so it never kicks in. We have tiles and I like having a cool floor in the summer heat, as do my dogs. In autumn and spring other finishes may feel more cosy as sometimes the tiled floor doesn’t feel obviously warm when the air is up to temp, tho it’s not properly cold either.

Hi, i don’t really understand why you’d need to attach something to a ceiling fix pole? Although it may be difficult to find one in the narrower bathwidth?? So do I buy a specific pump and then any shower will be OK?

To be honest my plumber bought it and fitted it. I wouldn’t have a clue. Are you using a plumber? Best to as there is a lot of pipework to be added leading from the pump to the shower head. Not a job for an amateur. This is the one I have but there are loads.

I think they work with any shower but you need to make sure the pump is for a gravity system.

I had an aqualisa digital shower installed in my last house with a pump, it was bliss after being used to a teaspoon of water being poured on your head!

I now have a pump for a gravity system with a wireless digital control however with a mixer shower.

As Sonia said I would speak to the plumber, it’s very confusing! They seem to vary in price too, I can’t find the pump I bought but from memory it was quite expensive. I always let the plumber source any plumbing bits and I’ll do the supposedly easier bits !

I had a pumped Mira digital shower in my last house as I had a gravity fed, low pressure system. Well worth having a pumped shower (but not for high pressure or combi boiler).
