Design Dilemma Kitchens

Kitchen/Breakfast room design - desperately need ideas!

Hi! We are about to move into a new home and already know we want a new kitchen. Where we are stuck is how to best use the space we will have. The kitchen was added onto the side of the house years ago, along with a study room (front). Next to the kitchen is a breakfast room that has been partially knocked through to the kitchen. The kitchen is 20cm lower than the study or the breakfast room and I think would feel to cramped if we were to raise it. I have been playing with ideas for the last 6 months but still haven't found one I feel happy with!

Ideally I'd like some kind of seating but it won't be our main dining area. Also thinking of some place for coats, mops, vacuum etc. Extending the kitchen into the study makes it feel too long and narrow which I don't like. Moving part of the kitchen into the breakfast area doesn't really work as we will be knocking a double door through to the living/dining

room on the opposite side to the kitchen so wall space is limited (and need room for radiators - maybe change to tall narrow ones!). We'd also like to get more light in there.

At the moment I'm back to my first thought which was to change the study to a laundry/mud room and not knock through (or maybe a door) and put the fridge in the corner of the breakfast room adjacent to the kitchen - but I am convinced there is a better way to use the space!! I'm just not creative enough to see it!

I'll attach a rough plan I did of the 3 rooms and some pictures of how they look at the moment. If anyone has any great ideas - I'd love to hear them! Our budget is not huge as we have the whole house to do up!

So you are happy to use up all 3 rooms for kitchen/dining?

Do you have a separate dining room?

Where do the doors lead to?

Are there any doors to the garden?

How many people do you want to seat in the kitchen/diner?

Good questions!

Happy to use all 3 rooms if needed. The house is bigger than we need so will have office, den etc upstairs.

Our main dining table will go in the living room as it's plenty big enough.

I'll attach a floor plan so you can see where the doors lead to. It's a very blurry plan and you can't read the measurements but it's all the estate agents had! The garden runs to the back of the Kitchen/breakfast/lounge.

Right now there is one door in the kitchen room that leads to the garden but one idea is to put french doors to the garden in the breakfast room.

Seating numbers are flexible. Would need at least 2 seats but if we can get more, all the better!

Hi - difficult to visualise without a room plan but this is a hotel we stayed in in London recently; I really liked the layout which felt intimate and comfortable. You could put a small table and chairs in the bay, perhaps and put a small sofa at the foot of the bed with the TV mounted on the opposite wall. Add smaller, armless chairs in corners that can be pulled out as needed but don't take up too much space. The door you can see is the door to the bathroom; the door into the room was diagonally opposite, near the French doors.

Thank you for your response. We had plans pretty finalised until we found out that we can keep just that long wall into the large space as it is a load-bearing. There is an opportunity to put a door in though. I am attaching what it looked like with all the walls that we can now remove. We have also been tinkering with ideas which I am adding as well. I added some comments on the plans as well. What we want to have is a dining area with a large table that seats 8-10 people. We want enough space for two people to work and cook in the kitchen. Thus, we were thinking of an island or an L-shape workspace coming out. We'd like to have a utility room to have space for all the cleaning utensils. Washer and Dryer will be upstairs in a separate laundry room. The living room is nothing formal but an area to relax and watch TV. We'd like to have an L-shaped cough in there for a family of four (2 kids under the age of 10).

Does your storage cupboard need to be in that position? Just thinking that if you could shunt your cloakroom along into it then you could access your laundry from the back wall of the loo. Hope you see what I mean. Then, if you lengthen the laundry into the kitchen space a bit you would be able to have a run of cupboards/units/equipment on the left too. Then you shorten that narrow utility wall on the kitchen side by having a run of cupboards/larder or what you will on that side too. Might give you a more practical use of space in the kitchen.

If you just want a prep surface and overhang for stools with some open storage then a wooden topped kitchen or dining table, raised up with something like newel posts or similar to work bench height with a shelf inserted between is very effective. If you require a deeper overhang (I believe overhangs larger than 15cm might need bracketing and the tabletop secured well to prevent tipping) then you could place an additional work top over it. You could paint the feet, legs and shelf to match your perimeter units or as an accent colour. Maybe a little on the rustic side but I have seen it with a back gloss kitchen with pine top and cream legs and shelf and it looks good, warming up the black.
