ugly house exterior

Hello, our house looks ugly from our garden, but I don’t understand how to make it better. We occupy just the ground floor, so I think the following options are available:

get consent from the neighbors above and paint the half of the house. Worried it might look weird, since the left part on the house will not be painted.
get consent from all 3 neighbors and paint the whole house. Too expensive and too much hassle
plant some climbers. Won’t help much, I guess
install some window moldings. Not sure if it’ll improve the look of the house and which ones to choose
other ideas?

I would speak to the neighbours. They may feel the same and be willing to share the cost of painting the whole area. If you are leasehold will you need permission from the freeholder?

Thanks, Donut. It has taken a long time, but we are finally getting towards the end. We decided to play it safe in the end, and installed hardwood sash windows that come factory spray painted in a warm white. They look really lovely, but now in contrast, the exterior render looks so awful that we will have to do that now! (Bit back to front as this should have been done before the windows, but things don't always work out as they should!). Also, keep meaning to remove that nasty little black plant pot which I only ever seem to notice on photos...

You could try to paint the pvc, with the proper primer, but don't expect much from it. Temporary make-over. We live in a small white 1950 home (Netherlands) and have replaced most of our windows over the years, from wood to pvc (with woodgrain, white indoors, warm grey out). Better insulation (sound and cold), less to paint, but immense cost. Do you have the budget to change them now or does your budget limit you to rendering and paintjobs? Same for the porch redo, changing the location of the front door and/or roof shape. Rain in Snowdonia comes plenty, so I'd adress the driveway first. I'd suggest an infiltration pit* a few meters away from the house, with drains alongside the garage and house. Enlarge the 'patio' and steps and add gravel along the front, so water can sink into the ground quicker. *) We've made one by drilling 30mm holes in a large pvc rain barrel, burrying it upside down with plenty of gravel and sand around it and connecting our gutters and regular rain barrel overflow to it, since we have no sewage in the back of the house. You could add a pump to the pit for summer lawn sprays, but we decided not to.

Erica, rendering the whole facade in a modern smooth render in a colour you love (dark grey works well if you like it, or a more traditional cream or stone colour) is probably the way to go. It will unify the ugly (sorry!) flat roofed extension with the rest of the house. Then a smart front door with a porch over, providing you’re permitted to come out from the building line. You could even extend the porch over the whole front, which would unify it further. Some tall pots with topiary or small trees, or something like bamboo in them would work well against the rendered walls, and smart lights either side of the front door. Also might be worth asking your builders if they have any suggestions for disguising the flat roof to make it look less, well, flat! Good luck with it! Catherine

I would paint it all, getting your neighbours involved if they are up for it. It will make a huge difference and you can add roses or climbers afterwards. It obviously bothers you and it may be a worthwhile expense? Imagine how fab it will look!

Thank you very much. About the permission from a freeholder it’s a very good point, thank you. Will read about this. I’ve absolutely no idea how it’s done. But you’ve convinced me to start fro talking to the neighbors first

You seem to be looking for some color in your life! If you have a green thumb then some narrow planters under windows and on the blank walls with some guide wires or trellis to guide some profusely flowering climbers to form a thick covering might improve the outlook. Keep guiding the plants to remain on the structure so they become have a from rather than becoming scappy.
