Big lovely old wood fire surround dilemma with wall colour

Hi all!

We’d love to keep the waxed wood in our Edwardian lounge, but with a modern bold(ish!) choice

of wall colour to complement the natural wood finish. Recently moved in and it seems this lovely surround with integrated panel windows is quite unique and no inspiration to be found online - currently walls are white with an undercoat to rid the old mustard colour!!

We were considering F&B De Nims but it just looks too grey in sample. Open to all suggestions!

Beautiful room, and yes that does look like a unique fire surround. If you want a blue in the De Nimes sort of area but with less grey in it, Stone Blue might work for you. But personally I'd be tempted to go darker, eg Hague Blue, Scotch Blue (on the F&B Colour by Nature chart, I think) or Inchyra Blue (just sticking to the F&B chart as I know it well but of course there are lots of other gorgeous deep blues out there). Looks like the room could handle it - perhaps with a large beautiful Persian rug with navy and red tones on the floor (sorry but I think your current rug is too small - though perhaps it's just a radiator holder!). Would be very cosy and I think a dark blue would complement the honey tones of the wood very well.

Nooo, I can never tell my O/H that he is right! ha ha. Aw, but I love this surround. Sigh. My burner is modern (already bought it) and more contemporary but I love mixing styles. I wasn't sure myself if it would go but I think once it's in and the wall is painted, I will superimpose it on an image and see if it works or not. The main issue was that the burner sticks out so it might look odd. Thanks guys

Thanks. Oh yeah, we're definately doing other rooms ! The whole house from top to bottom eventually. This room was top priority as it's the sitting room, we wanted to put our 'stamp on the place'. We've only been moved in since the start of the year. This is the before room, taken from the Estate Agents listing: .......... And now (trying to take a pic from the same place) The conservatory is hard to change, pic taken from the Estate Agents listing: ....... And now (taken this morning) - currently has our old sofa in there until we find some conservatory furniture that doesn't look like it belongs in a 1970's old peoples home. Only change is really the addition of blinds The study pic taken from the Estate Agents listing: .......... and now it's my man cave / music room And then .............. The current kitchen is getting ripped out and a new one put in starting 30th May. There is also a dividing wall that's being taken down between the kitchen and dining room to allow for a breakfast bar and a much bigger space. Are multi-coloured tiled walls in kitchens a big faux-pas these days?

I am afraid I think you both need guidance. Both colour and border will date your kitchen, the expensive items you should keep very subtle as they are expensive to change when you get bored of the look. If your units are cream, try the metro tiles with a soft colour, either grey or sage green (not dark), you need to check the colours against your worktop as they have to look right together. I would suggest you do something exciting with colour on the walls. Having no picture of your kitchen makes giving advice tricky, but putting colour on the walls is cheap and by doing it this way, in a couple of years if you are bored with it you can pick a completely different colour and change the whole look. Again, with the floor, keep it fairly neutral, as it is an expensive item, if it's a small room keep it light as this will make it feel bigger, if a big room you could be more daring with a darker colour.

As others have noted, it is absolutely stunning! So i am firmly in the no paint camp....I think I read a suggestion to see if you can lighten the feel by first changing the wall color in the side cupboards and see if changing the glass to plate glass - so agree! You could always take this as a first step and see how this changes things before going the full paintout path.

I love navy blue and can highly recommend a dulux colour called Breton Blue. You don’t see it very often, but I think it’s the perfect navy, and would look lovely with the wood. However… I’m also with Daisy - I actually think green would be amazing! I have a sagey/ greyish green by Mylands called Grosvenor Square, and it looks great with wood. It’s not however bold! A bolder shade would be f&b green smoke - it would also look fabulous with the wood.

Sarah, Daisy many thaks too for your help, this is great - green wasnt something we really thought about so we might try a sample - i have some convincing to do though on green (not my better half’s favourite to say the least! i might have a veto on my hands…) all good fun - challenging ones norm (beige pallete) i hope will be quite liberating!

If you’re on Instagram, maybe check out OHMYEDWARDIAN. They have a beautiful wooden doorway with very similar wood tones to your fireplace. One side of the door is painted in f&b Green Smoke (the obviously green photo), and the other side is f&b Studio Green - the dark one that looks almost navy. I think it just illustrates how well both green and blue would go with your fireplace!

Hi Sarah, thanks for this. Looks great we'll take a closer look at that for the samples. The darker colour certainly goes well with the wood...

For the rug size @hedgehog99, we have another sofa which fits against the other wall to the right... would you recommend a larger rug that sits underneath the sofas, or should the sofas sit directly on the wood?

Ah yes that was me trying to get a closer look at your fire surround 😉
I’d go large on the rug - aim to get the front feet of both sofas onto it. It will make the room look more grounded and balanced.
