Wall options for small bathroom

Hi,

Looking for suggestions of options for bethroom walling. The bathroom is small so ideas for making it look larger and slimline options would be much appreciated. I like the idea of timber wall panneling half way up the wall but I am not sure how this would work.

It is the only bathroom in the house so I would like to have a freestanding bath with overhead shower (Im thinking oval shower curtain). Also up for input is whether to conceal plumbing for this in the wall.

Hi Ellen. I've never had a freestanding bath or timber panelling in a bathroom, but my first thought reading your post is whether that's robust enough in a bathroom which will presumably get a lot of use (you say it's the only one in the house but not how many people are using it). The shower/bath arrangement sounds like it might create a lot of splashes and the timber won't be as robust as tiling, so you may end up with bubbling/flaking. Others with experience of these things might disagree though.

Personally I'd be looking at simple, large format wall tiles to tile the areas that need it, floor to ceiling, then leaving plastered and painted walls elsewhere. You could always mix in a more interesting tile in a niche in the shower area, and around the sink, which would add points of interest. And if you need a bath with shower over, choose options which will limit splashes as much as as possible. I feel a screen will be better than a curtain - unless you like mopping up wet bits and frequently washing shower curtains :)

Other than that, try to choose wall hung sanitaryware which gives a larger feel as you see more of the floor. And make sure you have good storage so clutter is minimised.

Hi, I'm using panneling tiles half way up the wall. They are from Lapicida. They come in two colours. I havent done mine yet but have the tiles and it will be far better than using wood, in my opinion. They are more expensive but as your area isn't too big it wouldnt be too costly and be well worth it :)

From what your describing we had the same thing going on,I didn't like the ensuite( too small) and the bathroom needed to be bigger,so we got rid of the ensuite and put a door between our bedroom and bathroom like a jack and Jill.After a while I felt it just didn't work so we closed up the wall and we now have one big bathroom.im glad we did it now. I too wondered if it would devalue the house and I'm sure if a larger family moved in it could be a bit of a problem,maybe someone from the real estate world will pop in and give you some advice. Hello jodg, I see well that's not quite what I had in mind : ) ) ... perhaps consider the closet idea for your bedroom... Regarding the shower screen...possibly an overhead curtain rail as opposed to a glass screen... It negates the need for a wall to fix the glass sheet to.. Or and this one requires more plumbing.. move the loo... in order to leave a smaller bath at that end of the bathroom.. If not then you can enclose the stairs and then fix the shower screen to the "wall" and keep bath at that end and loo and sink at the other end.. possibly losing the storage element under the stairs, which isn't ideal for what you want but it's possible you could create both.. if not smaller storage... : ))

I wouldn't change much regarding the layout/placement of white goods either. But it'd be possible to get some extra. For example, an L- or P-shaped shower bath would get a nicer shower space. You'd end up with the wider part by the window though so may then also consider opaque glazing or a screen there. A concealed cistern in the back wall would bring that forward by around 10cm. If you don't want to loose all that space, a boxed-in cistern and shelves above may give you a little storage back. On the washing machine: you triggered my inner geek :-) This may be possible. You need to research a few things for this: A) a slim depth washing machine (usually 425mm) B) availability of a height reduction kit for it (if these are avail gets height down from 850mm to 800mm) C) use an extra-flat bottle trap for the basin D) partly embed that into a thin washtable (to make the surface then a total of ~100mm above the machine) If all these go together it should just be possible to fit washtable, drains, basin trap and the machine underneath into a box about 910x600x500mm (HxWxD) which is kitchen unit height. The countertop sink would sit above that. Maybe a little bit of extra space could be gained still if you'd construct a basin from a flat shower tray with an integrated trap (a Wedi fundo plano is 60mm high) but I'm not sure how to put the washing machine drain on then. If the space is small then I think you should keep to one type of tile for the floors and walls. If you don’t tile one wall make sure you tile up that wall a skirting board height (tricks your eye into thinking the floor is bigger). Don’t worry about tiling behind the wc, you can access the workings of the cistern through the removable flush plate- I had to completely replace the flushing mechanism in one of mine and it was only a 10 minute job despite feeling like it was keyhole surgery! Tile from floor to ceiling but leave a large area (say from halfway up, to 1 tile below the ceiling), or as big as you can, untiled, and get a plain mirror cut to fit the space. It will make your bathroom feel twice the size.

Another idea is to build a framework slightly out from the wall, again up to waist height, needs only to be shallow, 10cm depth would work, and tile this. It creates an amazing shelf to place bottles, candles etc, and if there is a huge recessed mirror above it looks amazing.

If this is a period house ready-instating a picture rails does wonders for proportion really emphasising ceiling height space (contrary to popular belief)
Go for the panelling - preparation and correct paint treatments will pay dividends as will a decent extractor fan.
Go for smaller scale products and they will always sit well proportionally.

Have you considered using Multipanel, which, if youve not already come across it are waterproof bathroom wall panels, which are available in various sizes and designs as well as textures. They are very quick and easy to install, with one panel (depending on size) able to cover a whole wall. the use of these panels eliminate the expense of tiles and, naturally also, overtime, mould forming along the grouting. It can also be used on the floor so is a very practical and cost effective way of making the whole area look fantastic, yet simple and uncluttered with the clean lines of whole panels as opposed to tiling that’s guaranteed to last for many years. Hope this gives you food for thought!!
