Pergola Structure

I love the pergola structure in this project. I have a long span like the one pictured here that is likely too wide to use wood. I don't live in your market, but who did you work with to fabricate the steel structure? Thanks in advance!

Looks like a wonderful character garden that could really benefit from a more dynamic planting scheme to soften the evergreen backbone - lots of gardens of this vintage are dominated by large evergreen shrubs and trees which tend to make spaces feel claustrophobic and smaller than they are. The lawn should be maintained and enhanced with shapely borders packed with dynamic perennial plantings, edged in brick or steel to maintain the flow long into the future. I think I would want to dissect the existing stonework walls and steps with some more open simple terrace/patio areas that put you in the garden and take advantage of aspect whilst a timber pergola/structure would add interest and the opportunity for climbers. A really wonderful canvas that should be enhanced and developed rather than changed, maintaining the feel and character of the original garden.

Fire pits can be more modern of traditional & is a great addition to a garden , if a wood burning stove or fire pit is sited under the pergola then you would need to ensure it is a safe `fire` element under a timber structure. On choosing between the two `its use ` will be important, you say stove so that says you want to cook on it to me. Garden designers would provide a plan/design Landscape contractors generally will be the contractors to implement a plan. Landscape gardeners may only do soft landscaping & maintenance however some will do both soft & hard landscaping ( hard- the construction side of things ) Sometimes Titles get confused which is confusing always check with the individual what they provide. Winter is an ideal time to prune the Wisteria if you have not done so yet. Then you can also inspect the pergola structure to check it is solid and can be utilised. The wisteria will just need to be kept in check during its growing season as it grows so fast. If I were you i would collate an ideabook here on you project adding in images of exterior wooding fires/stoves & fire Pits

Hi, I understand your frustration at your neighbours miss matching fence. Being the sunniest part of the garden it only accentuates the fault with a spot light. You could add some horizontal trellis to the upper part or if your budget can stretch do the whole fence. Painted soft wood can be a really economical solution and give a great effect.Your square patch of grass is only adding to the limitations of your garden. its drawing attention to the four corners and not creating an mystery. Having a curve to your grass will lead the eye away and create the illusion of more space.I would suggest building a curved seating area on your south side in the L shape by your shed. Railway sleepers positioned vertically with a chamfered top edge create a dramatic feature and are a really cost effect solution to screening. I would mask the end of your garden with these positioned across the whole width with an entrance to the right ( North side) The sleepers would then decrease in height as they curve round masking your shed and forming a built in seating area. They can also be stained adding to the dramatic effect. Black can look great if balanced well with bold planting. You are very fortunate to have a lovely hedge on your right, it could look fantastic. Rachel and Carolina, thank you both so much for taking some of your time to think and design those sketches, it has really helped me in a stage I was blocked in my project. I now can keep on moving forward, that's so great. Carolina, I like your designs and they are actually similar to the sketches I was doing before I imported the soil in the garden but I think at this stage, following the natural curves of the garden will be much easier for me. I really like a lot of ideas you emitted. I will indeed add a birdbath somewhere and possibly a mini pond :-D Rachel, you just put into words and sketch a vague idea that I had but that I didn't know how to formulate! you basically read my mind. yes, I noticed there was some natural lines, and I wanted something more in curves but I didn't know how. your design makes it all look possible and realistic. to answer your questions, the round things are wine bottles. I was thinking of adding more wine bottles for edging but they might be a bit too short for high enough raised beds. I'll have to think about it... yes, the silver planter is a dolly tub. I was thinking of planting a clematis in it and some colourful flowers at the base of the clematis. I thought it would look nice somewhere against the white wall... thank you both so much about your ideas. I'll send you an update when it's more advanced. (it might take a long time though, but I'll get there!)
