Floor to ceiling wooden spindles: what is the best kind of wood?

I want to have wooden spindles that go floor to ceiling (like in the photo below), so I need a type of wood that is not easy to bend.
I quite like oak and we have an oak door in the house, but was looking for other more affordable alternatives. Any suggestions? Should I pay the price and go oak or would other light timbers be suitable too (I got quotes for ash, Douglas fir, Yellow pine)...
