Black or white worktop for kitchen?

Hi really need advice about kitchen quartz worktop. Initially my plan for to go for white marbel effect worktop but now after seeing some pics of black my husband really wants black. I think it looks very stylish and sophisticated but I'm scared it might be too dark or masculine....

Aesthetically, I really like both but, I my opinion, black is higher maintenance as it shows every finger mark, water mark etc and needs a lot of polishing/buffering. White on the other hand doesn't need this anywhere near as much (I have white quartz my parents have black) and unless you're comitted to polishing it, it looks quite messy in my opinion

We’ve got an anthracite grey kitchen similar to yours, with a large island too, we went for a pale sand coloured worktop as we’ve got grey floor tiles, I like the contrast and we needed the room lightening a little since it’s north facing. It works really well and still like it 3 years on ;)
Ps agree about the black showing every single mark, especially quartz.

I have black granite work tops and a huge amount of them and an island - my reason for choosing is that I believe granite is a lot stronger in the dark colours where as marble is stronger in the light colours - I am (hope husband doesn't see this!) a little bit bored of the black work tops - they are classic but a bit dead - next time, if there is ever a next time, I would not play so safe and would go for light work tops with a bit more interest. I would steer clear of work tops unless you are prepared to really look after them and treat them regularly! As for walls - I would go light - and ensure it is a paint that you can wash splattering off! Not a basic emulsion! That way, by going light you can change colour of kitchen accessories at any time to freshen it up and update it. If I was planning a new kitchen now, I would probably go for light tops with up stands and then have a feature surface in a different material - perhaps a rounded wooden block at the end of a unit as a feature. I love my kitchen but I have played it a bit safe, on reflection!!

I have black granite work tops - they are fab - I use a granite cleaner on them - just literally as you would clean any surface - a rub over.... The make is 'Method' - available from most supermarkets. HOWEVER, if I was choosing again, I would have gone for something less 'safe'!! I chose a granite that was very uniform and wished I had perhaps gone for one with a little more interest in the pattern - if you know what I mean! It is a natural product and wish I had gone for something with swirls or a dramatic line through it..... As I say, was playing safe at the time as it was part of a large extension and had far too many decisions to make!! Think I am right in saying that darker granites are generally more hard wearing than lighter ones - but don't quote me on that!

I am choosing a black kitchen and found the discussion very useful. As this discussion is 3 years old I am assuming you have been using your black kitchen for a couple of years now. Please can you let me know how you are finding it? I have been told by many people that black shows stains and scratches easily, so can be very hard to maintain. I do a lot of cooking, and hate cleaning. Am I making the wrong choice going for black?

For quartz cheaper than Silestone & Caesarstone, you have to be careful that you are getting good quality. Some alternatives aren't good. And by good quality, I mean good quality quartz, good quality machining, templating, flexibility at installation (e.g. some machining on site can be helpful to ensure tidy up stands, edges) etc. I went through finding an alternative earlier this year. My research led me to two companies. One was Rock & Co which offers a product called Urban Quartz in a large range of colours. They have a showroom in Hertfordshire, near St Albans. There was also another company called Cambridge Worktops which is linked to Stoneworld in Kendal, which offered a quartz product called Cliveden Quartz. . There were minor differences between what they were offering in terms of the quartz products and their processing, and logistics -- and each company wanted me to believe that their approach was great and the other's approach was inappropriate. But after a lot of questioning I had the feeling that I was willing to deal with either company. And in both cases their prices involved a significant saving. In the end I contracted with Rock & Co because they had the shade of off white that I liked best. They exceeded my expectations in some respects; met expectations in many respects, and fell short just in some. So I can't say the process was issue free, but I can same that I am overall happy, and that our quartz countertop is now installed and it looks amazing.

Unless your room is super-bright, black is going to suck the light. Personally, I do like some contrast in the kitchen - I went for dark cupboards myself, but had the white worktops to lift and relieve it (we are SW orientation with large windows, so it's definitely a bright space). As others have said, black is very high maintenance. You can see every crumb and watermark but you cannot see that it is 'actually' clean, like you can with white. My parents have black granite, so that's my experience.

It's white for me.

As others have previously said, a black shiny quartz is a mare to keep clean, fingerprint and smudge free.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think we would prob have a matt black quartz as i think it's more on trend and hopefully might be easier to keep clean?

You can see the smudges on mine, I’m definitely going for a lighter work tops next time.

I'd do some research about honed/leathered quartz as i've heard of issues and that they require more maintenance and some suppliers even get you to sign a waiver before supplying. Hi Alice, your kitchen is looking great!

We are currently designing a lot of kitchens with a darker finish for the worktops and we love this look! In this kitchen we used Silestone worktops in Cemento Spa, with a suede finish. The suede finish is much easier to keep looking pristine and free of water and other marks. We also used a smoked mirror for the splash backs to reflect light around the room. This is something you could consider if your space lacks lots of natural light.

White. Matt or shiny, it’s so much easier to clean. If your hubby prefers the black, tell him he’s responsible for keeping it good! Any dark colour in any finish is quite difficult, I think. I had a matt black floor tile in my last house—much harder to clean than the white tiles on the same floor (chequered layout). My parents had a black laminate worktop at their last house—or maybe it was resin—and it was a nightmare to keep looking nice. Incidentally, my own worktop top is white composite laminate—ie, 6mm of composite over a chipboard core—and while it can be polished to a high shine, I have chosen not to do so. It’s a doddle to keep clean.

Maybe a grey as above might be a compromise for you?

White every time…..we had black and changed it for all the reasons already stated .
