Styling Boho shelves

Hi there,

Looking for help with my shelves - I have so many books, but I want them to feel boho yet minimalist. I just cant figure out how to style these.

suggestions or thoughts on how I can acheive that vibe without losing the books? I dont like the idea of flipping them backwards.

I think the issue is that everything is lovely but all the same height. I would add a plant on the left, either real or fake, perhaps hanging down. Grouping things in threes rather than one by one would help. Books are incredible and always look good so well done there. Here’s some pics to guide you.

First of all i think you might need some book ends , which add a nice decoration to your shelves and at the same time they are useful to protect the books from falling. second thing you need to add some plants maybe try falling plants they look really nice in shelves. Finally, try to follow the triangle law for arranging the shelves that helps alot in developing the overall look of the shelves.

Hey Marc, I think our entire project cost around £1k, but there was a lot of shelves and as you said, much bigger than what you're looking for. The shelves sit on the connectors, they aren not connected to the wall in any way. You need to ensure that you have a circular cutter that is large enough for the pole to slip through but not the connector. Ive attached a pic for you to see how the shelves sit. The angle grinder was needed to cut the poles to length, all though most suppliers will cut for a price if you provide them with a cutting list. However I would suggest having one to hand to do any last minute changes. I didn't know you could cut them with a tile cutter, but worth a shot. Issues, we live in a victorian house without a single straight wall. We also have very few joists in the walls, so we had to be creative. We used the base of the poles and created a straight line with them, and cut down the backs of the shelves so touch the wall. Much easier that way. I attached them to both the floor and the wall. We attached the base plates with Stixall glue which is stronger than anything I have ever encountered. We have a tiled floor so were unable to bolt in. And then screwed it into the wall as well. Its beyond solid!

What age is the house? If it’s 60+years old I’d say you can go with any style. 60’s onwards (unless it’s mock old) go contemporary. I always think modern houses look daft/uncomfortable when people go vintage/Cottage/shabby. I like these styles but needs to work with the house.

Hi Lisa, I agree with Sonia (above comment) I would not remove the work surface space as it gives you space either side of the cooker to prepare/serve up. I love the shelving you have picked out as it brings a new dimension/texture to the space. Looking at your dining chairs you are not afraid of colour so I would pick a colour/tile that makes you smile and lay in an interesting pattern formation (herringbone/basket weave) to bring some colour and texture to the space. Hi Sian, I think the clock is great. Re the shelves its all about balance and grouping objects, so keep standing back and seeing the whole scene. Symmetry is naturally pleasing on the eye so , if you go large on the right do the same on the left, group objects in 3's,spread out the photographs, put some on the left too. Play around with candles, stacks of 3 nice covered books you like or that have some meaning to you, laid horizontally with ornaments of votives on top, try and link colours from your room onto those shelves too. The way you dress your home should tell your guests about you. Reveal hints of who you are to add depth and interest. You'll love it much more if you dress it that way too. Add a plant to one of the shelves on the other side too. It's quite fun to do, you just need a bit more to play around with here. Balance will oddly help it to seem less cluttered. Hope that helps!
