does the bookshelf have cupboards at the bottom or just another shelf

I was just wondering whether the inbuilt bookshelf has a cupboard at the bottom love the look and want to do something similar but cannot see the bottom of the bookshelf. Thanks

Hi, and thank you for your kind words. There is no cabinet at the bttom of the shelves (just at tall baseboard). Hope that this is helpful.

I wouldn't be ashamed, that's kids! What do you use the mini room off the study for? Does the ikea unit have storage baskets? Apparently the kallax replaced your unit so they do the branas basket which should fit? They're £15 each though so not cheap. That may then hide some of the stuff. What if you were to paint it in a chalk or really matt paint and maybe pop an ornament or 2 on top, do you think that would blend better? I would either move your bench elsewhere, or get some baskets to go underneath. You could look at a storage bench ( there are a handful on ebay with free p&p that aren't too dear or have a look at maybe an old fashioned wooden blanket box ( although my nan used to have one and I was convinced it was a coffin!). They are quite big and store a lot and could look good? Have you heard of streetlife? I signed up to it a few weeks ago and people also offer unwanted items on there so may be worth a look. It's definitely worth getting a cupboard costed up

Thank you 504937. It is me that is the glitch I am afraid. I see what you mean about the larder doors. The drawer between the sink unit and the ovens is 800mm. Do you think that is big enough? I wondered about using a 90cm range cooker instead of 2 ovens, to create some more storage space. With regard to the bin, that is a worry which pops into my head from time to time. I can place a compost bucket and a landfill bin in the 80cm under sink cabinet, but bottles and tins/plastics need a place too. That means a double bin for them. I agree that the end of the island is wrong, and best for a tea towel, especially as it is opposite the radiator (fancoil type).

Just adding better pics of the alcoves. I'm leaning towards having nothing at all in the right hand one. I have a vintage bus blind which will fill the space nicely if I shorten it a bit. On the left I could build an angled cupboard, possibly at the height of the bottom of the windows, which will hide the dvd player et al and have the telly on top, with floating shelves above for bits and pieces. These will do the job of a mantelpiece. Any suggested improvements on that? BTW the sofa will be changed for something less garish when I have the money. In the meantime it is begging for a loose cover! Ive pulled it 1/3 of the way into the room, to allow a run of floor to ceiling bookshelves incorporating a small desk on the wall behind it. Still gotta design and build this! Not sure if this will work in practice, but I thought it would be more restful not to have them looming down at me from the alcoves when I'm watching TV. Plus it puts the sofa nearer the fire.

OK so i have started with reducing the size of the island by removing the end cupboards. At the weekend i will plane the bottom of the end piece as its a little too snug at the moment; this will leave an overhang that will be trimmed down by around half to see how it looks with the breakfast bar. Long term i think the decision is to replace the worktop and move the hob by rotating 90 degrees and putting it at the opposite end of the breakfast bar. With the hob where it is, it doesn't leave much space for the breakfast bar to be functional. Moving the hob means extending the gas pipe underneath but otherwise straight forward. Kickboards and doors are just covering the gaps to stop the cats exploring until i can get the router out Disappointed that the only part of the floor seemingly not treated by the previous owner is the part that i happen to now have on show. all of the rest appears done. Debating scrapping the flooring idea and just having the flooring sanded and made darker. Once all done i will start paint; current options below. Its amazing what lighting and surface does to paint colours. They are all F&B, in order, Downpipe Grey, Hague Blue, Inchyra Blue and current. I'm waiting for "railings" to arrive.
