It came from Crescent House Furniture in Austin. They have amazing furniture and are wonderful people.

More important than formal or informal is making it a habit of sitting down together at a table rather than eating from your knees in front of the Television. If you have oodles of space & lots of friends a designated dining room can be a real luxury. Go to town on it, making it indulgent. If it is to be used in the evenings i would have rich deep colours, gilt framed paintings, & great ambient lighting including candles & candleabra to be reflected in a large mirror. To make sure a separate dining room works hard for its money make it libaryesque...double it up as a gorgeous retreat with books which add depth & decor to the walls. Include an armchair in a luxurious velvet fabric. When the table isn't laid leave piles of interesting books on the table. It will soon be a favourite room & even if you have small children it can be a soothing place to read stories when they are fractious, poorly or in the evenings. They will see it as a special place devoid of toys & T.V's. A special retreat for a grown up too when the children are in bed to sit with a glass of wine. Gone are the days when a formal dining room is a cold room only used on Christmas day when space elsewhere is at a premium..ridiculous! Nothing will replace the freedom of an informal kitchen diner for those families lucky enough to have room but if you are a young family & do have extra space a designated dining room is a real treat, but make sure it is used, & have fun indulging the senses. Remember, "Formal" is an unfriendly word & not how we live now. You don't want your guests worried about which fork to use. There is, however, no greater fun than occasionally layering a table with china, candles, & crystal all of which can be bought at antique malls & charity shops. Always include flowers. This can also be achieved at the kitchen table. Collect mismatching china if on a budget & beautiful cutlery. The best tables are laid to stimulate conversation & provide warmth & love as you break bread together.

Beautiful table ! Job for a pro if you want it good as new ... Personally I'd be worried that there might be unfixable damage -hence it was painted ? But if you know the history - it could be worth the investment of getting it done properly!

In a lot of cases, I suspect the answer would be for the same reason you do eat at a table - it's what people generally grew up doing, it's what they're used to doing and, being part of the television generation, it's just too convenient to do otherwise. Ironically, I don't tend to watch very much television at all, except when I'm sat, tray in lap, eating ... Another possibility is that not everyone has the space for a permanent formal dining table, and use one with fold-down leaves, for example, which can be hidden away behind an armchair, or somesuch, and wheeled out requiring the moving of other furniture) for special occasions - entertaining, or xmas dinner. For my own part, it's a combination of familiarity, and the fact that it's simply more comfortable to sit in an armchair, or on a sofa, tray on lap, even if I don't bother putting the television on.
