what colour to paint kitchen cupboards with a dark wood worktop

I have an iroko wooden worktop and cream painted kitchen units and tiles. The whole thing needs updating, really, but I'm not in a position to do that just now, so I want to ring the changes by repainting the units. I'm looking for something a bit quirky but don't want it to look too dark. It's only a small cottage with low ceilings and small windows. Any colourful suggestions?

I think simple white would freshen it up. If not for you then a dark or pale grey or navy, but I think that will be too dark. I found this picture of yellow, not for everyone but it is certainly quirky!

I have black granite work tops and a huge amount of them and an island - my reason for choosing is that I believe granite is a lot stronger in the dark colours where as marble is stronger in the light colours - I am (hope husband doesn't see this!) a little bit bored of the black work tops - they are classic but a bit dead - next time, if there is ever a next time, I would not play so safe and would go for light work tops with a bit more interest. I would steer clear of work tops unless you are prepared to really look after them and treat them regularly! As for walls - I would go light - and ensure it is a paint that you can wash splattering off! Not a basic emulsion! That way, by going light you can change colour of kitchen accessories at any time to freshen it up and update it. If I was planning a new kitchen now, I would probably go for light tops with up stands and then have a feature surface in a different material - perhaps a rounded wooden block at the end of a unit as a feature. I love my kitchen but I have played it a bit safe, on reflection!!

I think pale grey or taupe would look fab and it will keep your lovely room bright. Love the worktop. Farrow & Ball do some beautiful taupe and grey shades. Whatever colours you like, get match pots and paint them on A4 card and place them on the worktop at different spots so you get an idea of how the shades work with the worktop, rather like Carolina’s idea. Here’s a couple of pics. I don’t know the colours but hope it helps.

I think it would depend on the tone of the oak and the tone of the walnut. I don’t think yellow/orange oak would work with a reddish walnut, but an almost black walnut might work with a grey toned oak floor, especially if there’s darker tones in the oak. However, I would agree not to mix— you already have oak parquet and marble tiles. I think adding a third strong texture could be a step too far. If it was me, I’d either get an oak worktop, marble effect worktop, or a worktop that works with the tones within the marble. Speaking from experience btw—I once combined a harlequin floor, cherry effect worktops, travertine and accent patterned tiles. I hated it, it made me so uncomfortable that less than two years later I covered the splashback tiles with panelling painted to tone with creamy whites on doors and floor. Such a relief! And a much more flexible starting point for adding other colour/bursts of pattern.

Love your kitchen, you’ve done a great job, not only does the kitchen look good, it’s totally practical, drawers are the way forward, even if they are more expensive than cupboards. I’ve just redone a kitchen in a house we rent out, the old one was finally falling apart. I was going to go to Howdens and use the joiner etc we knew, but in the end we used a small local company, which cost us £300 more, but the quality of their interior cabinets and doors was so outstanding, plus they could do everything, including tiling, we went with them. We didn’t change the floor, but did everything necessary, I’m hoping it lasts well and our tenants look after it!

Oh, thanks, Sonia, I really like that yellow. Perhaps not for the whole kitchen, but maybe the lower units. As you say, it's certainly quirky!

Little Greene Bassoon is a lovely colour. A dirty warm yellow, more complex than bright yellow but still strong enough to make an impact.

Or, Slaked LIme by Little Greene is a lovely grey that can read as warm.
