Furnishing bedroom with high vaulted ceiling

I have a bedroom which is approximately 3.8m x 5.1m and has a high beamed ceiling which goes up to 3.4m at the highest point.

At the moment all I have in there is a king sized bed and I'm not sure what to do about wardrobes/storage etc.

Photos of the room and rough floor plan attached (ignore pile of furniture on the bed - am in process of decorating downstairs so this is a temporary solution :-). )

Options seem to me:

- put 2 x double wardrobes on left hand wall facing the window where pictures are currently and chest of drawers/dressing table at foot of bed or

- to go all out and fill the entire 5.1m back wall - and pull the bed out in front but not quite sure how that would look.

Unsure about whether to take wardrobes right up to ceiling....and where to fit drawers etc

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Hi Jo,

Love the high ceilings.

Having floor to ceiling wardrobes may be quite overpowering in the room and take over from the space.

My thought would be to have a partial wall behind the bed that would create a walk in wardrobe and then place the bed in front. I am attaching some ideas below.

I quickly mocked it up on sketchup to give the idea too. Hope this helps :)

Absolutely love the idea – thanks so much for your time and the images are great.

I’m just not sure I have the space. The bed is approximately 2 m long, so even if I left only 50cm between the foot of the bed and the wall, that only leaves 1.3m for the walk in wardrobe. I keep reading advice that says 1.5 m is the absolute minimum you can possibly go.?

Hello, I have searched for some images for your inspiration. As you on the the first two images, there is gap as well between the wardrobe and ceiling. If you believe visually it works for you, than go ahead. Alternatively, you could place some baskets as well on the top for extra storage, personally I would consider it if that helps. On the last two images, you can notice that the ceiling is high and the wardrobe is reaching the ceiling. I have the same in my bedroom and love all the space I have even if I need a chair to reach the top cabinets (I store there stuff I hardly ever use), so all the space is used up for storage. I say don't move sown your built in wardrobe to the middle. On the right I love that sitting corner, where you also have light entering your room. Looks pretty nice, stick to your plan! I think that will look good given the shape of the room. Just bear in mind furniture placement as SJD said feature walls In a bedroom would more typically be the bed ŵall. Advantage of choosing grey and white is that any colour will go. Teal is great with splashes of mustard or orange. If you don't have furniture yet maybe take advantage of the height and get a bunk with a futon or desk underneath. As mrskain showed in one of her pics you could also have something hanging from the ceiling. What are your sons interests?

I think this looks great. Could I please ask is the ceiling brilliant white? In my experience decorators are a bit old school about ceilings and radiators being bright white but in my opinion painting the radiator in Dix Blue would make it disappear. In my opinion the slightly vintage feel of Dix blue is better suited with a soft or aged white- I like Cornforth White for its grey quality which in my opinion only looks grey when contrasted against brilliant white but would soften the look in this room.

Example here. Our 1950 terrace has 2.3m ceilings on the first floor, so when we took out the smelly old hardboard, we decided to sacrifice half of the attic to gain about 70cms height and paint the joists offwhite. I was just hanging our curtains when taking this photo, which are actually the same color as the ceiling, but sunlight makes them look yellow. So my suggestion is to add some interest to the ceiling (or a canopy bed?), as 4m is quite a lot when lying in bed. Oh, what also helps is a (slightly) darker ceiling.
