What can I do with my sloped garden?

I’ve got an awful sloping garden which leans at an angle from my house. There are eight steps from the back door down so it is quite steep, then slopes down to the bottom. I’ve had a 20ft tree removed from the left corner of the grass in front of the garage and the fencing is being fully replaced on both sides with slat fencing in a couple of weeks. I have also planted a border with flowers and shrubs with bark to tidy it up. Hoping these small changes will start to improve it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else I could do to make it tidier and more usable? I think a professional landscape would be too costly 😭

Hi, I think you will be pleased with the new fencing it will make a big difference.

Maybe painting the garage a stone colour, the same as the houses opposite, will make the garage less dominent and stark.

You could lay a few more lines of paving to make the patio more usable.

Climbing plants such as clematis would look colourful and not take up too much room.

I would be tempted to plant an acer bloodgood centrally at the bottom of the grass.

Hi there,

Ideally, to make it more useable, you would want to either increase your patio area or to level your lawn area, but Im affraid both these options will be costly since it will involve shifting soil.

To make it more pleasing to the eyes, there are certainly some superficial things that you could do such as using clicking decking tiles to update your concrete slabs patio, some well thought painting colours on the fence and on the garage, and obviously a well selected planting scheme to give you plant colour year around would also help. I also think that you could change the shape of your lawn ( by changing the shape of your planting borders)This planting needs to be specific to slopping areas since your borders are not leveled.
I could do a simple consultancy for you as an online service which would be a cheap way of getting professipnal ideas to cheer this space up on a budget.

And how old are the kids? The summer house might be useful for them to make into a play den? Don’t know how safe the glass is though. And concerned about hard standing under swing gym set. However the garden would actually be pretty good if it was planted up around a centre lawn (mower could go in big shed) and everything tidied and power washed. Planting should be around lawn with room to walk between planting there and planting on perimeter to give a designed effect. The swing gym needs moving into shadier area whatever you do leaving you to make your evening warm sitting area. It could be a really good space and well worth some effort. :)

I thought en masses planting of just two or three grass types like Acorus, Japanese Forest grass and Red Baron (not exact names but you’ll find then by googling)

can you remember what that stump was? If it was a laurel, you will need to remove it or poison it as it will come back and could lift and damage your pattern imprinted concrete. As above any small evergreen shrubs would look nice, I wouldn't put any gravel down of bark as it will end up all over your drive. Once the plants have grown they will cover the soil. Skimmia japonica (as above) Sarcococca humillis (scented) Hebe various specimens Cistus x corbariensis Viburnum davidii A nice Acer palmatum would look good in the middle or Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'

Have a look at tonight’s garden programme on bbc2 called Make Your Garden Perfect. It featured a sloping garden.
