Backlit mirror (round) in bathroom vs standard round framed mirror

Hello,

I am currently designing my new bathroom. The vanity will be 600m wide, black - handless (duravit), with a crittall style shower door, white wall tiles (vertical metro) and grey and white octagon design floor tiles. I have been planning to have a round black framed mirror hang over vanity with vertical wall lights on either side. However I am reconsidering a round mirror with back light, eliminating the need for the wall light. I am just not sure if the backlit mirror will provide enough light (yes, there will also be downlights), the reliability and overall look. I would welcome any thoughts on this or if anyone has undergone a similar thought process and what your decision was. Thank you for looking.

Hi, my bathroom remodel is due to start end September, but have finalised design and ordered most of the components already. I originally started with wanting wall lights either side of a mirror, but have been swayed to scrap that and go for an illuminated mirror instead. Part of the reason is that this will be on the left wall where the door is and I was slightly worried about projection of side lights in the eye line as you enter, but really what made it for me was seeing illuminated mirrors in a showroom rather than just on line and how neat and clean they look. I am going for 360 edge lit to ensure I have sufficient lighting for make up etc, but also get a bit of the backlit effect. Hope that helps!

Jules is right, I think its very nice having a 360 degrees light, and its great looking too if you can find a good one

I'm looking to renovate the ensuite of my 2 bed flat and came across photos of open plan bathrooms. Some of the photos look great and I'm considering it as I don't have much room to work with in the bathroom and my bedroom has room I can use. I'm looking at moving the basin into the bedroom area, which would free up space for a bath and shower. I was thinking of making the basin look less bathroom-y and more like a makeup desk using wood and soft furnishing and a full length mirror. The rest of the bathroom would be behind a wall (no door). Main problem is that the door to the bedroom will open to the the basin (the rest of the bedroom is on the left), which I guess would put people off. I quite like the idea but I'm concerned it would put off potential buyers (more so after reading the comments). Should I stick with a traditional ensuite? I can put a bath and shower in there but I think it would be too cramped or I can loose the bath and have more room with just a shower. What do you think?

Hello, To be fair I very much like this bathroom. I would not consider painting anything, obviously the bath tub has to be changed and you need a new vanity unit. This bathroom has a luxurious look, the mirror is a great addition, when choosing vanity unit I would go for a more traditional look, I think the previous wooden one must have been amazing when it was in good shape. I don't agree with the sink taps but all the rest works for me. Painting the bath tub is probably not the best option. Like Emmanuelle said it will start pilling off the paint and that may look even worse than it is now. I would not go for round mirror as the vanity unit is large, having one mirror on the middle won't work. StJames Design Interiors

Everything Jonathan says is correct. You have to factor in the prep for the room. Removing tiles re-doing the water pipes, chasing them in to the walls etc. Then the re-tiling. The labour is the biggest budget usually. We went for rectified porcelain...........not for the faint hearted. Nasa would have a problem drilling through those. So, yes, as above choose the tiles carefully. Our bathroom is roughly the size of yours without the corner missing. So, take 25% off the tile cost of the tiles:- The tiles were £1500 ( wall and floor ) - The wall tiles are 900mm x 450 the floor tiles are 1200 x 300 Bath - half price £695 Shower - half price £299 Toilet - full price £450 Vanity Full price £699 Bath taps £300 Basin taps £150 Shower valve £150 Shower head and arm £150 Shower spray hose and head £150 Aquapanel £95 Tile adhesive £95 Coloured Grout £45 Total cost of purchases £3,278 We ( the wife - my labourer and I ), took down two walls, moved a doorway, put one wall back up. We re-routed all the pipework, central heating, hot and cold feet, chased pipes in to the walls etc. The whole thing took 3 weeks and I had a tiler friend help me for 3 days. Plus on top of that I had a plasterer in for the weekend for £400. Thus we only paid £1200 for the labour. If I had charged for my labour - plus mate for say 2 weeks, ( not three - as I wasn't working flat out ) instead of doing it for free it would have cost a further £2,500. Total labour should have been :- £3,700 plus the purchases £ 3,278 = £6,978 The bathroom is a luxury bathroom, so yes it's at the higher end of the market, but you can see how things mount up. Even when you try and save on the items going in, it's still the labour that gets you. A bathroom is a horrible, job, i'd rather do a kitchen any day and that's bad enough.

If space is your priority, perhaps the second toilet would be better? What brand is it, btw? I will eventually be redoing a bathroom (had planned to do it this year, but gas price rises have made me decide to install a wood burner instead). Really like the shape of this second toilet and it looks like it would be so easy to clean.

i think the kind of style of bathroom you go for depends on the kind of mirror for this one, feel like a backlight mirror would look good in a very modern bathroom, however if your going for something more rustic or not so modern i would go with a standard frame mirror personally./
