Actually the curtains look fine, better than I expected but yes a totally different style to the rug and both quite distinct patterns so clashed. I'd go with a more abstract fluid rug in similar colours and a splash of something like pale lime. blue or orange so it's not too matchy matchy. One step at a time! I've been known to buy and change sofas and rugs in my living room numerous times until I'm happy (luckily I like pre-loved things so rarely lose much, if any money on them, just takes a bit of effort. Hi Katie, The best thing to do here would be to start with what HAS to stay and make that your basic colour palette. Otherwise you will be bringing new colours and it feel like "too much". So in this case you have the colour of the walls, the new sofa and your beautiful Chesterfield chair. These do go well together as long as the rest of the room doesn't have dark things in (so I would agree that the black shelf is probably not right here as it makes the room feel tiny even though I don't think it is). So for your new rug and accessory I would stay within these kind of tones and additionally because the pattern on your sofa is very unique (but really nice!) I would steer off pattern anywhere else in the room, this is basically your statement piece, the one you decorate around. And then I see you have 4 matching cushions on the sofa, I would keep 2 (one in each corner) but add 2 new ones in a colour that matches that of the rug, this will tie in the whole area (with another one on the chesterfield) so it will instantly feel more like it all belongs together. I think you feel it looks too solid is because you haven’t followed through with the rest of the room, for example cushions to tie in with it. Further up these comments minnie101 has suggested some black patterned cushions which i think would lift the scheme, however if you really don’t like it then follow your heart and return it. Why keep something you don’t like? Then choose a colour-way that you prefer, such as the blue you suggested. A blue coastal theme would tie in nicely with the neutral theme you have at the moment. By the way, i got a Turkish rug from Olney Carpets in Bucks, and they let us take it home for a week to see if we liked it before buying! True service, and yes we did buy it! Of course buying online does give you that option too. I wish you lots of luck.

We have a similar dilemma and have decided to go for kitchen safe laminate and lay it ourselves. We spoke to a builder who helped us on another job last Summer and he said Howdens laminate is good - though you'd need access to a trade account to buy it. Perhaps you have a contact from your previous work who can help you with that. We enjoy a DIY challenge and can't justify the LVT price tag right now - although if we could then we would go for LVT. I wanted to comment because I noticed your price estimates for Karndean. When we had our LVT quote, the fitter was able to source the Karndean flooring we wanted at around half the price that I'd seen in various places online which meant it came in at around £15 per meter which is cheaper than quickstep. So if you're having the floor screeded anyway (which is a big part of the cost)... perhaps worth talking to a fitter to see what they can do which might save you some money on the LVT to make it more justifiable.
