Plasterer covered up all internal wall vents

Hi!

Can someone please advise me on this please?

All internal vents have been covered up by the plasterers. Are they mainly for indoor air quality or do they also help with prevention of damp and mold etc?

Should I open them back up?

Hi this definitely looks like damp. Be wary of getting 'damp specialists' out to assess it. They will undoubtedly suggest all the plaster is hacked off up to one metre, the wall injected and then replastered. You may find you have to do this in the end up but it is worth taking time to investigate. Do you know if the wall has previously been injected? If so you may find that the damp proof course has been breached. We had this problem in a previous home. If you take the skirting board off, see how far down the plaster goes. If it is down to the subfloor the water could be wicking up the wall. Damp stain and blocker paints are a waste of your time and money btw ,they only mask the problem temporarily.

I’m in agreement with Ribena. Do think carefully before going ahead. When we moved into our current house 30 years ago we had a brick wall built to separate the kitchen from the dining area on the end of the peninsula. It was a bad decision. Dust, muck and the like collected in the joints despite vacuuming it. When we had a new kitchen it got taken back out. It created such a mess taking it back out but at least I now have clean surfaces.

Goodness me did they put those sockets in? Depends on your budget but you could have the sockets moved to a less obvious position. You will need an electrician and maybe a plasterer to tidy up the wall once they’re moved. Or you could fill the untidy bits with filler yourself, let it dry and then sandpaper it smooth.

Are they air bricks? Do you have central heating? If so you shouldn't need the vents. As long as the house is kept warm you shouldn't have a problem with mould or damp.

Walls are not insulated. Would assume I should make sure exterior vents are kept so moisture can escape from the cavity? There's been issues with walls sucking up groundwater, so to let that moisture escape somewhere.

I'm going to have have to insert some damp proofing rods in several places.
