Different kitchen countertop materials, same or different heights?

Hello all! We are building a new kitchen from scratch. We've decided on using two different kitchen countertop materials, walnut butcher block and a green/grey granite. The granite will be around the sink. We will do a 90degree meeting of the materials. It has been suggested that we make a slight height difference between the two materials because its hard to make it perfect and it will also lend a more informal tone, which is what we like anyway.
If we do different heights how much is appropriate? I don't want it to be too dramatic but too little might look like we tried to match and failed. Your thoughts? Anyone do this?

Comments (8)Hello R countryside, One way to view the idea of differing heights re the ceiling is to approach this from an entirely different angle... Rather than consider the heights of the ceilings and worry about them. Instead focus on the decor height of the internal walls.. Ie where you paint or paper up to. Or consider floor and walls together to create a feeling of space. Another way to create a seamless and coherent look within the extension is to decorate with the same palette throughout... It doesn't have to be magnolia... It could be any colour either dramatic or more muted.. Consider too the possibility that you keep the palette the same from walls to ceiling.. Several visual examples for you to look at for inspiration too to compliment what I am suggesting here. One of my favourites is to colour block, and this can be another way to add a dramatic decor that you can taper off to the desired height and keep above to a single colour or not... :)) A period property but you can clearly see how the colour can swiftly dictate an eye level, and above picture rail height the cornice and ceiling is treated as one. Of course you don't need skirting, dado, picture rails to paint these. It is an old but a favoured decorating technique, that is surprisingly versatile... Here I would have painted the skirting either the same or a shade up or down depending on the flooring.. So you can dictate how the eye sees the rooms by deciding the heights (ie the wall decor) so to speak.. Here's the same principle but at dado height... (for some reason they're all dark which I love but they can be a palette you love.. Or be bold with a colour and do everything one colour with a shade darker on the ceiling.. This will reduce the height. The same could be applied to 1 colour in entirety. Then you add interest and texture with everything else! Furniture, lighting, placement, collections.. the possibilities are endless... 1 colour need not be boring. It then relies on texture the air of intrigue in your furnishings and lighting.. Also consider the heights of lighting.. Pendants or clustered lighting can be low and offer a dramatic statement over a table or a side table for example. Or a favourite reading chair.... Steer clear from ceiling acne ( my term for spot lighting) instead look to floor lights, wall lighting which can have an upwards illumination but of a more diffused and interesting appearance overall... For a softer glow.. Colour blocking is really fantastic you can be creative and still continue a theme throughout... Comments (5)Personally I wouldn't mix the floor colours - especially when made of the same material. I have a dark wood floor colour throughout my house (except bathroom). The spare bedroom is quite small but if styled in a thoughtful way doesn't have to feel small - even with a dark floor. I like houses that has rooms that flow, rather than clash, as it can feel disjointed with many styles under one roof. Comments (46)Have you considered shutters? They give a real ‘wow’ factor and really make a feature of both rectangular and bay windows. You said your bay window looks out on the back garden. With shutters you can adjust the louvres to allow as little or as much ‘view-through’ into the garden. They would also give the privacy you need in a bedroom, as well as making the room dark enough for sleeping when the louvres are completely closed. You said you’re not changing the structural element of the room or the windows. By having shutters within the apertures, they would not get in the way of any cupboards or other modifications you might eventually make to the room. Another asset of shutters is that it doesn’t matter if windows are at different heights. Having the same product across all windows in a space creates a lovely considered and unified look. Also, when windows are above radiator (as in your square bay) and you have long curtains, you tend to lose heat behind the curtains. As shutters are insulating and fitted above the radiator, they can be used to reflect the radiator heat into your room. In a nutshell, shutters create a lovely aesthetic look in a room. You don’t need to dress the windows in any other way as they are a wow factor in their own right. Shades of white will make the room appear even larger. Comments (5)Hi, do you have photos of the space? Is it a light or a dark room? I would personally choose a white or light grey quartz or something like Silestone. Maybe a marble vein in it, like Calacatta Gold. You need to get some samples to see the colours in situ. But if it is a very light filled room, you could also go for a darker granite or quartz....See More
