Hallway needed without losing the chimney

Hi there, I am new on Houzz and could really do with some advice and sharing of information. When we brought our house it had the most awkward lay out ever and now its time to change it.Our stairs are right at the entrance of the house with a separate door to the living room. The issue is you have to walk through the living room to get through to the kitchen. I would like a hallway going through to the kitchen but also wish to keep the chimney. I don't mind extending the front or moving the doorway.
The wall that separated the main entrance and utility is where electric meter is and the closing in the utility is where the boiler is.

Consider extending the utility room in order to make it a route through to the kitchen. You will probably have to dress the utility more like a bootroom to make it an attractive walkthrough

your welcome from my experience you are always starting again with homes as styles and you change so you will have a head start. I'm always changing things with paint and reinventing rooms but over the years found that the classics especially if originals like yours will always stand the test of time and never go out of style but they dont have to look dated mix it up. if you tire of the carpet which I love think about making it into a huge rug bounded around the edge with what ever colour adorns your walls then would look stunning on a wood floor same with the sink could always be used in another room I would team it with black or even faux marble back drop oh endless fun and NOT AVAILABLE on the high street enjoy your home always

I currently have about 5 large boxes of books in my house and 5 “unused” alcoves so alcove shelving seems an obvious solution to me! What I’m struggling to decide is 1) How far recessed from the alcove the shelves would look best (2cm or more in an alcove that is 30cm deep?), 2) how chunky/thick (top to bottom) the shelves should be and 3) whether to pack the shelves in eg for novels without leaving much space between shelves or make a taller space on the bottom shelf for photos etc? Any ideas please?

I absolutely love what you've done, Diana. It's so elegant and stylish, but not fuddy duddy. You've updated it, without spoiling the character and beauty. Way too often, people spoil the most beautiful period houses, trying to be too clever with garish and over the top decor or too many "on trend", fashion features. When really the house needs to just speak for itself. You have a beautiful house.

I really like both designs. It is clear, that you have really thought through your design scheme. I love design 2, I would lose the hall. It's a narrow wasted space. This design ( No. 2 ) is perfect for modern living and if you wanted to retain that element of zoning in the family area why not have some element of continuation from the porch wall to the end of that sofa - this could be created by a 2/3 way wall ( just to the end of that sofa )OR use wall panel slats floor to ceiling painted in the same colour as the walls OR go for oak. Agree with Johnathan. Extending the "utility" room will allow you to create a mudroom/hallway/utility space.
