Pinched light cable causes electricity trip

My upstairs lights have tripped and will not come back on. I was in the attic at the time and thought immediately that it may have been caused by a pinched wire under a section of attic flooring I installed recently. I raised that section of flooring up and I could see that on the cable that was trapped between top of the beam and flooring had a pinch mark on it.To fix this problem I plan to cut the damaged section of cable and use a junction box the reconnect the cable. The cable is fairly tight, I may need 2 junction boxes with a new section of cable inbetween. I guess my question is, is this going to work? Is it a safe long term solution? Many thanks in advance
