Positioning of skylight in rear extension

We are doing a rear and side extension which will be our kitchen and family lounge. Conscious that the dining area opening into the family lounge would get less light and hence ideally we should have 2 skylights over the family lounge. To keep symmetry, we would require 2 over the kitchen area. Given there is a normal window and bi folding door, I feel one skylight over the kitchen is sufficient. Equally spacing the skylights will only partly resolve the light into the dining area.

Why do your skylights have to symmetrical? Personally i think most people building an extension worry so much about light that they forget they have specified massive bifolds. So I say make sure you can have a pendant light over the dining table and then plan roof lights around that

Having rood-lights in our kitchen, dining/sitting area, and, with recent summer temperatures, light, glare and heat should be your main considerations - not symmetry. Consider your orientation carefully. Our back garden is NW and the architect placed roof lights to assist with light penetrating into adjoining rooms and obviously for our extension. Light in the area is generally great. However, we did not consider carefully enough glare and heat during summer months when sun is high. There are spots in the room that have necessitated shades during summer months in the dining/sitting area. We do not watch TV in this area but, if you intend to have a TV in your family room, consider the location of the roof lights carefully.

Hello. I love option 2 most. It feels much better to walk into the space with the kitchen there and much nicer working in the space over looking the garden. As you say, it's also a big plus to be able to also see both dining and seating areas too. Obviously I don't know near enough about the property or your needs to say whether this works for you but an alternative to lose the long living room which may mean you end up with wasted space - would be too lose the utility and move the bathroom down the hallway unto the now marked utility. Making the hallway bigger to enter the kitchen further down. You could then have a utility/boot-room at the front of the property moving through to the kitchen in the heart of the home - looking over the dining and living at the end which both look out over the garden/patio are with as much glass as possible :) Just another idea. When concept planning a project like this I start with tracing over the plan and marking each of the more expensive elements to move - like structural walls/columns and drainage. This helps as you start with a much clearer plan. Then consider views, sunlight, movement patterns, sizes and configurations of fixtures and fittings, etc... Draw bubbles/blocks over the top of the clear plan for the different activities you'd like to accommodate - you can also cut these out of bits of paper so you can move them about and play with them until you get a configuration that you like. Courtyard- often the cost of moving drains is prohibitively high and a courtyard does get light in to the center of your home and lots of people don’t like high up window in a bedroom plus they have to be a certain size for regulations that often doesn’t fit the available space. Personally I love them. Separately- do you need to extend? Your stated aim seems to be an extra bathroom. Could you put one under the stairs and move the kitchen access?

I agree that the space between the sink and hob is dangerous and this kitchen is divided by the back door. But there are many many ways this could be planned. Have you considered using a concept planner to help you visualise the layout?
