Too many different patterned tiles downstairs.

We are remodelling our downstairs. I love patterned tiles but need some reassurance that I’m not over doing it please?
Bootroom a grey background/white star tile(1st pic) The bootroom leads to the hall where we’ll have oak wood effect tiles (2nd pic) Leading off the hall one way is a downstairs loo where I fancy beige and white tiles(pic 2)Leading off the hall in the opposite direction is the kitchen/diner. In the kitchen area with dove grey cabinets (not a huge area) I fancy grey/white tiles (pic3) which will lead to a dining area which will have the same wood tiles as the hall Do you think it will all be just too busy? I’m worried that I need to be more grown up and pick some tasteful plain tiles but I just get so excited when I see patterns

Hi Sue,

They're all beautiful tiles in their own right, and while each of the patterns is different, all of them fit with an overall aesthetic that works coherently together, tied together by the more neutral planks.

Difficult to give anything more than a very general opinion without seeing a floorplan with your expectation of which tile goes where.

As a general rule, as long as each of those patterns is far enough away and not too obviously visible with the other patterns, then all should be fine.

If you can, upload a floorplan, showing the different tile areas with different colours/hatching.

But for what it's worth, I'm a fan of opulent patterns too...

I love patterned tiles, but I think too many styles will be busy and overbearing. I would pattern tile the hall and boot room and loo in one pattern. It does really depend on the style of your house. Those Victorian style patterned tiles usually look better in a period home maybe? Pictures of the areas in question, along with a floor plan would enable Houzzers to advise more accurately.

Cushions are definitely a nice addition to a bed when it comes to comfort and cosiness. Rich, fluffy cushions add to the feeling you want to have when you are in bed: you want to feel relaxed. Besides, although they can be a pain to remove before sleeping if you have too many of them, they upgrade your bed to the next design level. I have 5 cushions, all of them rectangular and fluffy. I have mixed the colours, patterns, and textures in order to make my bed stand out: a nice trick for that is to use white sheets, and vivid and colourful cushions to contrast with the whiteness of the bed. Plain velvety mustard yellow and fushia plain cushions mixed with green geometric patterns, ... I've got them all!

I love your style. If you are after industrial, geometric style then you do great. With the minimalist style if I was you I would ask myself e.g.: How many chairs I have got in the dining room and why? Answer: because I am having bigger family, or friends around, (or simply) I really like that table with that amount of the chairs. That is all great. Now - how many lights I have got in the dining room and why? Answer: because I don't know what else to put there or where else to put the lights and I like them. OK, do you really like it? If yes, leave it there, but if you feel like there is something not quite right about it, like light on the table while there is light from the ceiling, take one out (of course the ceiling light is absolutely gorgeous). As minimalist I wouldn't want anything which doesn't do any purpose, so dry flowers would go all out of my house. In your case I would use on the table long tray of succulent. It will make the room feel fresh (instead of dry). Or if you like fruit, I would put a large probably metal, glass, or porcelain bowl with fruit on in (avoid wooden container on wooden table). Very large rug under the table would soften the feel too, but if you prefer dining area without rug a have rug by the sofa (which that would be my choice) I I would put a large, textured, but simple tapestry on the wall and maybe large clock on the opposite wallpapered wall. In any room I would avoid flowers in the vase and instead I would get nice, large indoor plants, which are easy to look after (they are not that expensive too and make the home feel so fresh and alive/living.

Thanks Sophie, we finally bought the 600 x 600 as we loved it do much, with similar colour grout I think it would be fine. what are your thoughts on the grout? We are doing an inside floor and flowing into the outside patio with the same porcelain stone, except one is an outdoor rougher finish. But... we've been told that the laying of the stone outdoor needs a 4mm grout line minimum, preferably 5mm for outside, but the inside we were hoping for 2 or 3, but then it will look like its a mistake, and different if the grout sizes are different and the tiles wont obviously line up.. so now we're not sure how to lay them, either next to each other, or in a brick tile fashion, and now what do we do about grout? Same inside and out maybe a 4mm for both, or smaller inside and larger outside? This is all Too confusing, what do most people do?.. we're also not sure if we need expansion joints anywhere else? We currently have them at the join (between ply and concrete base) and doorways, but not sure if needed anywhere else? we have a good strong flat base, and de coupling matt too and flexible adhesive is that enough? Apologies so many questions..

That's interesting colourhappy - we did omit the aqua tiles and put just the taupe with blanco (which has some grey tones in the variations) but it looked a little bland which is why we thought the aqua might liven it up but now I'm thinking you are right and they are too cool for the flagstones.

I wouldn't have 2 different floor tiles in the kitchen/diner. The wood effect ones would be good for the kitchen/diner and hallway I feel.

I’ve added a floor plan for you to see, hope it’s not too small to see! We’ve also changed the layout of the kitchen so ignore the units on the plan. Red area is boot-room (patterned tiles) leading to the blue area which is the hall (wood effect here). Then into the kitchen (we’ve changed the original layout here so ignore the units on the plan) which is the green area (patterned tiles). This leads onto another blue area (wood effect) dining/seating area. Finally the downstairs loo is the turquoise area (patterned tiles). I’m thinking the patterned areas are not immediately next to each other so do you think we could get away with it?

Actually looking at the plan now, it might be better to extend the tiles in the loo (turquoise) to the red bit outside rather than put the bootroom tiles there?

I think it will look lovely. Will create interesting zones. Boot room is out of sight. Cloak room is also out of sight. The patterned tiles actually complement each other as a theme. The only bit I may be inclined to keep the same floor tiles is the kitchen living area to stay with the wood effect.
Maybe use the kitchen tiles in the bathroom if you really feel you want to use them.

I really like your choices. Lovely tiles. I think you should have whatever you please! If the mix of patterns make you feel happy and uplifted, go for it. If you are unsure (and maybe you are, a little, because you are asking for input) then maybe think about which doors may be open most. So downstairs loo is generally closed so doesn’t need to match. If the boot room leads to the hall, and they have a view of each other most of the time, I would have them the same. And so on. But really, have it however it pleases you!
