Where to put a downstairs loo

I'm wondering whether I can install a downstairs loo, and if so, how. Also (crucially), how long I might have to save up to have this work done.
Having looked at some options I think having building work done might be my only option but I'd love to see if anyone else has any clever ideas.The house is a 3-bed semi and at the moment the only loo is upstairs. The soil stack is at the back but I don't know where the sewer runs. I have outdoor space at the back, front and the side along the kitchen wall.

Would it be possible to go into the space of the cupboard and under stair area? Storage could be added to the lower under stair section to ease the loss of the cupboard….

Hello folks! I haven't disappeared, just had whooping cough (yes, seriously!) with a garnish of gastric flu and torn muscles from coughing fits. So that has severely impeded our efforts (hubby's had it too, and it lasts around 3mths so we're not out of the woods yet!) with our new house (which I now describe as semi-derelict before we bought it) and so had no time/mental energy to properly get updated on what's been happening with you guys. Truth be told, I've started reading a few times & either got interrupted (mummy-ness) or fallen asleep, without finishing. I've missed this, but u guys, esp Monica & RoRo have been in my thoughts. Where to start?! I think I've taken in all that's happened in this thread since I went AWOL but might have missed some finer points. Monica, I'm so sorry to hear what u'v been through, with the RTA & the cowboy tiling / wallpapering on top! (& work always picks worst times to intensify - I just started on a Task Force this week, when shd really still be on sick leave). I mean, a marker?! Seriously?! Isn't it common knowledge / common sense to use a lightly applied pencil? Sounds like u r doing best thing by looking at it as a learning experience. Still, he deserves an honest review somewhere. Anyway, onwards and upwards, I'll look at the lounge link when I've finished this post. BTW I LOVE your artwork. Vivacious, bright and deep - is there an insight there? ;-) And RoRo, wow you've got a lot on your plate! We've been so frustrated with being held back on our projects by health, but u have taken on a bigger scale of project altogether, sounds like it's verging on municipal! U guys inspire me. :-) Thinking of starting a thread on our living room, it's the most 'civilised' room of the house so far, but I didn't take the north-facing position into account when I decided on a colour scheme of turquoise, grey and lime. (Doh!) So far I've made some headway on a concept I'm excited by, but it needs some tweaking so it doesn't feel 'cold' with the blue tone of the natural light. Are you up for sharing some of your thoughts on this??? Hope so. :-)

You probably already know this but you will be restricted by access to the external soil pipe which is probably already laid down in architect / sewage plans. You don't share the upstairs plan but I suspect an upstairs loo is in similar position in the first floor plan. You may find the loo has to stay where it is (ie backing onto the side wall) but you could still change the position of walls and doors. I like Jonathan's plan above but not sure moving the loo into the main house would be possible. However building on this you could create a door which only accessed the loo from the hall way (but orienting the loo on the side wall) and a door accessing the utility from the new living space per Jonathan's plan.

I like the kitchen better over that side as well, I think the flow of the room works better. I feel like I've been through all possible kitchen layouts but hadn't thought of that one so thank you, I'll give it some thought.

Thanks for coming back. We are planning to rework the first floor too (so creating a master plan for the house) but only executing the ground floor first budget wise initially. Have attached existing first floor and also 2 plans for first floor. First idea was essentially just building about the ground floor playroom extension - however having thought about that more, that might be a poor decision light wise for a NE facing rear. So we have a second option, that only half builds about the playroom, and then essentially creates a double extension on the left...but we will ever have the money to do 2 extensions upstairs and and could also mean our ground floor extension is dark. Another dialemia. So to cut a long story short, upstairs layout is not firm.

The position of the soil stack is crucial and knowing where your main drain runs, as you have to get waste to it. A plan of the top floor showing the position of the WC and stack would be useful.

From the plan, it looks as though you might just have space for a tiny WC under the stairs. With a macerator, you could probably then run a waste behind the kitchen units if necessary.

Placing it anywhere else without extending would take up too much space.

Personally, I would question whether this is a wise project to undertake: the cost to benefit equation doesn’t really stack up for me.
