Which multitools have a backstop?

I need to do multiple cuts with some precision about the cut depth. I bought a multitool (£65) thinking they'd all have a backstop and it didn't. So I bought another one (£120) and that didn't either. Returned both. Can anyone give me specific models that definitely have a backstop? It's not listed on the box, the web or anywhere else. Many thanks!!!!

Multitools do not have backstops. What exactly are you doing so we can make suggestions for the correct tool.

Thanks Daisy. Bit involved. I need to make cuts in some large chipboard floorboards without cutting things that lie beneath, so the cut depth needs to be precise.

Laminate flooring needs an expansion gap otherwise a change in room temperature will buckle it so you either need to replace the skirting so the floor can extend under it, else spend hours slicing the bottom of the existing skirting whilst it's in place with a multi-tool, or just buy the scotia. Personally I just fit the white scotia and repaint the skirting with it in place which I think looks better than the wood coloured scotia then use a multi tool to cut slots at the base of the door frames so there are no ugly gaps. This way the scotia stands out less and the flooring doesn't look like an after thought. It also gives you the advantage of being able to run caulk along to fill any gaps between the scotia and the skirting (our walls are never true!) and the White scotia is usually cheaper.

Hello. It looks like the room needs to be softened. The great thing about white is that you can add to it. What are your favourite colours and add white to it to make it lighter. Is there a favourite object you have in your dinning room and add some accessories to match it. You can soften by using wood plants and lighting. You have two box shelves why not put then together in one of the alcoves. That would give you the impression of a bookshelf. You could then get a plank of wood or shelf and place it on it. Which would leave the top to put big books plants / favourite things on it. There are lots of thing you can use to prop up a shelf as long as they are the same height, stools, boxes, wooden blocks, square or other shaped glass vases... You could change the colour of the box shelf fronts, there are an amazing range of paints so get a tester pots or B&Q or other DIY shop will make out colours for you just take the thing you want to match with you. Also there are lots of different colour duck tapes that you could use. Or get wallpaper samples and line the cubes or the outside edge. Do not over fill the cubes with books so you see the lining. Change the look of the files, and boxes by covering them, again wall paper samples, or even fabrics. If you have a fav dress, skirt, trousers, duvet even, that have a pattern or something you like, but no longer fits, use them instead to cover them. In the other alcove, match it to make it symmetrical or put a large plant pot in there. Resting next to it can be more books. Add a picture next to it. Lighting would soften the area's. Some battery powered string lights which you can put in a glass vase, or on the perimeter of the alcoves. You can pin them using a stapler or tool station does an extra strong double sided tape called mammoth. Note it will take your paint off if not careful, so to check position, use bluetac first. The chimney breast could be your favorite pastel colour or strong colour. Or the white framed mirror could be the favourite colour. You could put lots of framed and unframed pictures on it. Charity shops have an amazing frames for pennies. I have even found postersize frames and 3D frames for under a £1. Websites like freeprints will print off pictures for the price of postage, a bit more if you want bigger images. You can frame postcards, images of from magazines, newspapers. Make your own, typographic inspiration, or a persons quote from your computer and frame it... Another shelf / over mantle under the mirror would give another dimension to the area. P.S. Do not forget ebay and local charity shops for shelving. I hope this helps.... but most of all experiment and have fun.

Invest in an random orbital sander and a whole bunch of sandpaper. Like Katie suggested you could change handles. I would get some sturdier shelving as the ones there appear to already be bowing - 18mm MDF or plywood would work well. Rip out the ugly carpet and get some stick on vinyl tiles or wood planks. Cheap and easy and will last as you won’t be walking on them. Doors seam fine enough, maybe replace the hinges if you can’t salvage the old ones. Then you could match hinge and handle colour. I would paint the entire outside of the wardrobe in a dark colour to hide any imperfections. Paint the interiors in a pale neutral colour or maybe even paper the inner walls.

Highly recommend an impact driver (with variable speed control), that's my most used tool followed by cordless drill (get a good quality 18V pair with interchangeable batteries). Otherwise probably best to draw up a list of all the jobs and see what's needed. My sliding compound mitre saw gets a fair bit of use, useful if you are planning to do skirting, architraves, etc. An oscillating multitool can come in extremely handy. Depending on the jobs in mind, maybe a circular saw, or better a track saw with guide rail. If fitting doors then an electric plane might be useful. And don't forget PPE.

Yeah, I have one, and know where the pipes are anyway. I still have to cut directly over a pipe and there's no way round that but that's not really the issue (I have a piece of steel shim which will slide between the pipe, if I lift the board a fraction, and wouldn't do the blade any good but would stop the pipe being cut).

It's not a conventional floor. It's a bizarre DIY job (previous owner, home-made garage conversion, basically a big wooden box inside a double garage which we use as a utility room) but it was surveyed and the answer was "bit peculiar, wouldn't have done it like that, but actually fine in structural terms". It got building approval when it was built.

He's used thick 8X4 chipboards over 1.5cm high timber battens (and not enough of them to take the weight we need to put on it - two freezers, a dryer, washing machine and other stuff). They just warp the floor because the battens are random distances apart but often 2ft or so. Also, some of the joints are hanging.

Until now I've had the appliances on a weight spreader (a couple of heavy marine ply sheets with a rough-and-ready torsion box internal construction, spreads the weight across several battens). They been there for 5 yrs no problem but it looks odd and we're trying to improve the room (finally got the utility after 5 yrs!)

I investigated pulling the floor up and putting down deeper battens (also to improve the insulation) but that means replacing two doors, one of them external, because they only just fit over the current floor height (looking at doing that with mat trays).

But we downsized five years ago and have possessions to fill a bigger house, so the utility room is packed (can't even get at some stuff). Pulling the floor up means putting stuff in storage, and we're 10 miles from the nearest facility, that would take for ever and I'm nearly 70(!)

The compromise was for me to take up the floor boards under the current load spreader, put additional weight bearing battens down under just that bit, and relay the boards. But (I told you this was complicated) we had a leak last year and when it was repaired the whole room was decorated. Like, beautifully.

The boards fit under the skirting and I'm trying to be Mr Precision and do it without pulling the skirting off and redecorating it. Hence cutting the boards. There is mystery wiring which needs investigating round the room edge, under the boards, just visible in parts under the skirting. Obviously the electricity would be off at the consumer board but I don't want to cut that until I know what it is.

What I wanted to do is cut the boards so that a) they are smaller and a near 70 yr old with a slightly arthritic hand won't do self-inflicted damage lifting them and b) only remove the boards where I need to improve the weight bearing capacity.

Suggestion: get an electric saw that you can set at the depth required, but you would have to leave a margin away from the skirting board but this would still enable you to lift the floorboards up. We currently use a Makita battery saw which is very light and convenient. This is hubby’s recommendation and he is 71 with arthritis too so could be the way forward.
