Smooth or textured paint for outside wall?

Hi all,
Just scraping off the loose paint off this garden wall ready for painting again and wondered, as it's such bad condition, would I be better using a textured masonry paint??
I've never used one before or seen what it looks like ie is it grainy or just that the paint is so thick it leaves raised bits??
I've washed it with bleach solution first to kill off any algae etc and will rinse it down before painting (once dry of course).

I have used a textured Mason art paint some years ago- it was like paint with sand in it! Which sound awful but did hide lots of imperfections when finished. If you are thinking of pressure washing the concrete path and low brick wall I would do this before you paint. Also you should leave planting for a few weeks to give enough time for the bleach to break down.

Thanks Colour Happy. Plasterer has been in already but only plastered where needed so I'm assuming that means we don't need to plaster behind wall paper (some of which had to be removed for the rewiring) and Painter seems happy enough to do remainder of filling/smoothing walls but thanks for the tip, I'll definitely check again with them. Re sisal, no dogs but small kids at home so need to stick to softer/more standard carpet!

Hi Ellie. Rather than change the colour of the rendering on the bottom, you could have it professionally cleaned - using a “soft wash” technique, NOT jet washing. It would bring it back to a lovely colour. We have a local company called Blue Lagoon Softwash who do this in the Northwest. Not sure where you are but you could find another local company - just make sure they do “SoftWash Solutions” as that’s the technology needed ...

It totally depends on how "well" the artex was first installed. My parents house used to have artex ceilings in every room! I took them down quite easily with a steamer and scrapper. They had almost perfectly smooth ceilings underneath. A bit of filling and sanding two-three coats of paint and job done. There were some spots though that had been re-artexed at some point and they were very difficult to remove. the steamer had no effect on them so it took a lot of soaking, scrapping, filling and sanding to get those bits right. Thankfully that was only a handful of areas. I saw a decorator once paint an artexed ceiling. He stepped outside for a break once he had done one coat. I was in an adjoining room and thought I could hear water dripping. Stepped in the room to see strips of artex just peeling right off and falling to the ground. He scrapped of the remaining bits and then painted. End result was better than anyone was expecting! So in summary if the artex was of poor quality and the ceiling was poorly prepared when it was applied, it will come of very easily. If on the other hand they did a proper job then its cheaper and quicker to plasterboard over it and start again.

What about adding the silica sand to it to create a subtle texture? I tried a mid pile roller but that doesn't hide much ( and not the bubbles from my other thread that haven't shrunk 😱). Not tried a masonry one yet though as we got the wrong one ie must be pro one so doesn't fit our roller 🙄

I would get a wire brush and try to remove as much as possible first, where the paint is still thick this will still show even with textured paint.

I would also look at those cracks and maybe angle grind them out and fill them first.

Yes you can see where I've scraped all the paint off now but I've only done one coat as waiting for another couple of dry days to put the second one on. Kind of looks like a world map at the moment, ha ha
