Wood sanded staircase different colour

Hi everyone, I am renovating my staircase. I have removed the carpet and got rid of most of the old paint underneath. I am now sending with a 40grit paper. However, the middle part of the steps still has a darker colour than the sides. How can I make it uniform ? More sanding with a lower grit sandpaper ?Big dilemma, any help is welcomed!!

Try an electric hand sander? It will be better for removing varnish and paint. You can hire one if you don’t want to buy one, although they’re not too expensive to buy. You can also view tutorials on YouTube with videos of how to use one.

It might just be the difference in the timber. Not all timber is the same colour all through as it’s a natural material.

As above, I would also consider painting the green wall white, along with the console table, maybe even putting slatted shelves in it to put the shoes on. I think you may then find it would be a less busy space and a space for everything. Have fun with everyone's ideas .

Hello ghesp, For seamless continuity paint the ends of the stairs white as per the rest of your woodwork.. Normally I'd say eggshell but you have gone with gloss.. So you could do the stair ends and then have a runner like your carpet pic at the bottom of your set of images.. I would keep the banisters white as this lends well to the scheme you have already.. Or if you want to introduce a bit of warmth strip the banister and don't paint the stair ends.. Here's two pics to show what I mean : ))

I love the idea, it's nice to put a full length mirror at the top of stairs too, and your darker colour would frame it nicely. Difficult to see exactly without a picture of the hall and staircase, but sounds good x

I must confess, i'm totally ok with mixing old and new, but mixing types of wood and wood colourings maybe not so much. The trouble is that you stand the risk of making the different finishes clash unless you go for total contrasts, ie: Stained / waxed or varnished floorboards with maybe a White Ash Laminate or anything else that's very pale, or conversely the other way around, White washed / limed floor and a dark laminate wall. This also all depends on what period furniture you've aquired. Do you have any pics? If the Furniture is mahogany say, then that will sit very well on a white floor and with a dark wall. Oak, Satinwood, beech will be harder to place as you can't put it against a mid-colour wall as it will be rather lost into it.
