Light shades for soft lighting?

Hi there, I've always had a problem with finding good shades for good lighting. It seems most lightshades that are cylinder don't give good lighting because it just falls out the bottom and is too bright and harsh, and the lightshade when the light is on... Can be really orangey or just don't look good.
What kind of shade will give a nice soft glow around the room?

I use these hessian shades, they cast a lovely mellow light and show up the texture beautifully. I also use Tala bulbs which have a slight pinkish tinge.

Great work so far. I love the colour of the blue on the wall, the painting, and the chest of drawers. Are any of these pictures appealing? I'm thinking a bit of yellow would be nice to add or you can just add varying shades and textures of neutrals in the bedding, throws, and curtains or blinds. I've also included a couple with bronze as previously suggested.

Hi Annie, Here are few options within your budget you could replace this fitting with. We would suggest 2 or 3 fittings evenly spaced out to add more light to the room, like in this example photo. 1 Light Merle Wall Light - Smoke Hula Decorative Wall Light - Aluminium Kimi Wall Spotlight - 1 Light - Satin Chrome Alternatively you could install recessed down-lights or go for LED strips, but this would be more costly. Hi Jordan, hope you’re well? When it comes to the brightness of an LED bulb, Lumens (LM) is now the most important measurement. The excellent energy efficiency of new LED lamps means that Watts (W) is now only a measure of the energy needed to power the lamp – it no longer tells you how bright it will be. The lovely bulbs that you’ve bought are 440LM and, usually, around 400LM would be fine for a bedside lamp. However, it seems that as yours don’t have a shade and are too bright for you, lamps with a lower number of LM - perhaps around 220LM – may be more suitable. Definitely had a glass shade. What your looking for is a replacement with a neck so the lip sits on top of the screws. Fabric shades in a neutral linen as Colourhappy suggests give a lovely warm glow. In fact most fabric shades give a soft glow, unless they are very dark. I’ve also got some angle poise type lamps and they are very glaring and I will be changing them!

Hi,

We would second linen shades. They are lightweight and thin, allowing a wide array of light to filter through. You could also try rattan shades these allow a large amount of light out through the gaps in the shades. Glass shades are also ideal and non of the light is filtered as it comes through the shade.
