Need help with living area

We're really struggling with how to arrange furniture in this room, and do we put up a wall or room divider to break it up?

As you can see, there isn't much light in the top of the room, which puts me off having a wall in between. However we don't have many rooms downstairs so breaking it up could be beneficial. I am pregnant so a small playroom could be workable. No need for an office as there is one upstairs and on the other side of the house is a kitchen/dining room.

The focal point should be the fireplace but we do watch TV and aren't able to put the TV above the fireplace as it gets too hot.

Currently the TV is next to the double doors as is ideal on that wall as the wires all go to a box under the stairs. That being said, we could move it if nothing else works. The rads are shown in the picture.

I am interested to hear opinions and if anyone has any examples of rooms they have split.

Hi Emily,

If you do want to partition a room like this then using glass doors is an option for you but you will need to be mindful of the function on the rooms and how you expect to use them. Maybe looking at 2 spaces one more of a snug with the fire and the other end a more multi functional space with sofa and tv, toy storage and doors outside.

Hello Jeannette, what a lovely project! I've worked on a number of bungalows and they have their own unique challenges. Making the spaces work for our needs today, and for your own family needs have to be the priorities. I would suggest you appoint an interior designer before thinking in detail about the kitchen. An interior designer will find out how you want to use the space and come up with clever floor plan that is workable and beautiful. This is going to be a really important investment for you. The only real way to make it clear from the kitchen is to have it against the back wall at the foot of the stairs, but this may then make the bottom of the stairs look cluttered and it will then be difficult to put a coffee table there. If you are going to use a table I'd go for a clear glass one so that it looks invisible. I think the best place for the sofa is on the wall along the stairs, it seems the only logical place.

Hi there, Have you looked at rubber flooring? Very sleek & contemporary look, extremely hygienic, soft underfoot, and because its an insulator won't be cold to the touch so great for walking on in bare feet. There are lots of different options for rubber flooring but they look so good when installed!

Thank you for your response. We had plans pretty finalised until we found out that we can keep just that long wall into the large space as it is a load-bearing. There is an opportunity to put a door in though. I am attaching what it looked like with all the walls that we can now remove. We have also been tinkering with ideas which I am adding as well. I added some comments on the plans as well. What we want to have is a dining area with a large table that seats 8-10 people. We want enough space for two people to work and cook in the kitchen. Thus, we were thinking of an island or an L-shape workspace coming out. We'd like to have a utility room to have space for all the cleaning utensils. Washer and Dryer will be upstairs in a separate laundry room. The living room is nothing formal but an area to relax and watch TV. We'd like to have an L-shaped cough in there for a family of four (2 kids under the age of 10).
