Odd patch on garden

We've tried to grow grass here but given up. North facing garden. Not sure what to put here. Have a large amount already given over to white pebbles. Maybe the same or chippings or completely different?

I think you should be planting shade loving plants such as Ivy, hostas, helibors, astilbe,foxglove,heucheras, Solomon’s seal, bleeding hearts the list goes on…..

Given the rest of your grass seems to be ok is it possible that bit of ground is contaminated by some builders chemicals or waste? Might be worth digging around and see if it smells strange or has a layer of rubble underneath before spending money on plants

You need to split it into sections/rooms - I did this with this garden in Bracknell and it worked really well. I know yours is narrower, but it will still work. Consider sinking part of the garden down to make a seating area - it creates interest and privacy and makes a really intimate space. Get some height in with an arch/arches to move the eye up and away from the boundaries - this helps to remove the 'corridor' effect of a long narrow space. I used these simple wooden arches in this Woking garden. Use different textures in the paving (mix slabs, setts and cobbles) to create visual interest. Try painting the boundaries black - it helps minimise them as black is the colour of shadow and acts as a great foil for any planting.

Triangular plots are fun to work with. If you have a design that follows the angle of the boundary you will only accentuate the angle. You can disguise the angle by doing your design in either straight lines or curved shapes with planting to disguise the awkward angles. A strong design will dominate the space and take the eye away from the triangular plot. If you use straight lines, make sure they run perpendicular to the house, not the boundary. If the lines follow the triangle they will accentuate it. Also the design needs to make the thinner sections feel wider than they are - the knack is to visually lead the eye from one area to the other within the garden. Also to make an area feel larger than it is, make two or three separate spaces in the garden. With the garden divided into 'rooms' you will be able to make each area seem longer/wider and each part of the house will have its own garden view. I hope this helps. Draw the space on to a piece of paper and have fun with shapes cut out of different coloured pieces of paper. Have fun and you will end up with an outdoor space to enjoy. Hi Amyevania, I can't see too well from the image but it looks like a good layout to me baring in mind what you want from the lighter area of the property. I think it may become annoying moving passed the dining table to get to the kitchen and living space but if you're heart is set on the dining table being in the lighter area then I can't see anything wrong with that :) Do you have a designer to help with you're colour pallet and furniture placement? Or is it just jiggling around a space you already have? The colour of furniture and walls in the darker area will have an effect of the feel of the space. Good luck :)

With the front of the flat assigned to bedroom and study space it's the three rooms at the back where you could make the most change to enhance the living space. You only ever asked about furniture placement in the lounge but given that you've bought the flat are you open to making some bigger changes to maximise the space? For example, is the wall between the smallest bedroom and the lounge supporting?I'm assuming that's your study but if your partner is at home and working at the front of the house, knocking these two rooms together would give you a much more versatile space with an office area for you, with doors open onto the garden on a nice day. (Replacing with a stud wall if moving on is not a major job). Another idea might be to keep that wall up and see if the kitchen could be opened up to make an open plan kitchen/living/ dining space. The dining table could then be located near to the kitchen area. With either of these options you are losing one of those four doors which are making furniture placement awkward. Another idea (I'm full of them!!) Do you need the storage cupboard in this room? This could be blocked up so access is obtained via the largest bedroom to make a bigger wardrobe/cupboard space in there. If you'e got enough wardrobe space in there that could also be an office area with double doors to be closed off out of sight when not in use. Doing this (and moving the radiator, perhaps for a streamlined vertical one elsewhere in the room) would give you more opportunities for furniture placement. Please feel to tell me none off these are possible or appealing. I watch with interest when someone asks for an opinion on a cushion only to be given advice for the room that will see them spending £5,000!! (I do it myself to avoid getting off the couch and do something with my own house!! Plus, I'm great at spending other people's money) Best of luck and keep the photos coming as you make changes because you have grest potential with this flat and there is some fab advice on here .

Grass doesn’t like shade so good to try something different. I agree with Jonathan so plant some shade loving plants. Too much hard landscaping and not enough planting never quite looks right so more plants will create a good balance.

I would also suggest planting - and I’d replace the other grass too. Along with the other plants mentioned, something with a bit of height, like fatsia japonica, or even a tree fern (if not too cold) will help to enclose the seating area a little and make it a bit more private.

If you really want grass, there are seed mixes suitable for shady areas, you just need the right seed. Also check the ground is ok and not contaminated as said above as it doesn't look to shady to me.
