Irregular shaped north faced garden

Looking for design advice on our irregular shaped garden which is north facing.

Ideally like to have a patio area between the side kitchen door going to the garage & would like to lose the patio by the bifold doors & the walls as we don’t use them & they cut the garden up

We have a 5 year old who is autistic & would like to encorporate sensory plants along with make the garden more welcoming.

I don’t want to lose the mature hawthorn tree as we like the birds using it to nest along with the bay tree & white lilac.

Can anyone recommend designers around Surrey or can do something virtually?

Open to suggestions 😁

Just getting rid of the red brick wall will open up the space no end. I think keeping some paving where you enter the garden, even by the bifolds, will be useful especially during the winter to prevent traipsing mud or debris indoors. Do you ever watch Garden Rescue with Charlie Dimmock? They create some lovely gardens on there. The newer episodes are better the the older ones with better budgets. It’s on iplayer. Here’s some ideas

You need to split it into sections/rooms - I did this with this garden in Bracknell and it worked really well. I know yours is narrower, but it will still work. Consider sinking part of the garden down to make a seating area - it creates interest and privacy and makes a really intimate space. Get some height in with an arch/arches to move the eye up and away from the boundaries - this helps to remove the 'corridor' effect of a long narrow space. I used these simple wooden arches in this Woking garden. Use different textures in the paving (mix slabs, setts and cobbles) to create visual interest. Try painting the boundaries black - it helps minimise them as black is the colour of shadow and acts as a great foil for any planting.

I have white hydrangeas at the moment and love them but they haven't done very well (but it's a different climate where I am just now). Yes, I'll give them another go if they're ok on the edge of the Pennines - the new garden is in the Cairngorms. Perfumed flowers are a nice idea so I'm going to add the mock orange to my plant list. I've succeeded with cornflowers, forget-me-nots and love in the mist but funnily enough never had success with heather. To be honest there's plenty of the natural stuff all around so I'll probably give it a miss. I've a question about tall grasses? How would they cope with the weight of snow? Presently I have bamboo (about 1m tall in pots) and it manages to cope with big dumps of snow but I do shake off whatever snow I can before it freezes and the sun is out. I'm also considering alliums along with the tulips, crocus, snowdrops etc Other plants I'm thinking follow but I'm stuck for ideas for other times of the year. I've grown some of these from seed before and don't mind so much if they fail: roses lupins delphiniums solomon’s seal lily of the valley phlox peony Japanese anemone campanula grannies bonnets foxgloves helibore lilies gladiola dahlia geranium hosta rhododendron foxgloves agapanthus moon daisies canterbury bells

My advice....avoid a North facing back garden if you can. you can change most things about a house except its aspect. i lived in a house with nth facing back garden and poor enough front sun too becasue of neighbouring house and it was depressing to live in, cold in the summer when everywhere else was bathed in sunshine. Clever architectural design can ometimes put in velux windows and large picture windows to the front to capture the sun, but in reality we all live in the rear of our houses most of the time. On a practical level, do you really want to have to walk to the rear of your garden to enjoy your patio, when closer to the house would be more sheltered? Do you want clothes to dry on the line all year round (clothes lines usually near the house), do you want your car baked in sunshine in the summer sitting in your front drive? you didnt say where you live, but i live in a country where the weather is very mxed and we value every ray of sunshine we get. as we cant sit out all year round, nor anything like it, we need the sunshine to come into our living space as much as possible. hope this helps? Hi snthouse. I drew up a couple of ideas earlier. Not to scale or anything and I’m no garden designer but it’s a hobby of mine and hope it gives you some ideas. Just noticed your drawing, I thought it might have been a bit squarer in the corner (hard to judge from photos) but I think you can adapt to suit. Main objective was to provide privacy whilst still letting light through and one solution to this could be by using screening. This could either be with plants/ trees ( might be too bushy/ take up space) or using a structural element which is partially open for light. I’ll post some ideas for screen ideas in next comment but here are my sketches. If you’re wondering what something is then let me know (I just have these visions in my head 🙂.)
