Path ideas please!

We have a woodchip path to the next part of garden, we have used wood as the border trim. I hate how structured it looks, when I tried to take it up you see the muddy edge side of the grass which will leak into the bark.. what else could I put here between the path and grass for a more softer look? I didn't want trim at all just a few planting bits to soften the look but yeah I'm not so sure, any advice would be great

Bark deteriorates over time and is normally used as a mulch. So you might want to consider replacing it with paving slabs, or gravel for a cheaper option.

Could you have glazed doors to let a bit more light in or maybe some under cupboard lights. Ours utility is approx 2m x 2m, it's enough for a washer, dryer, fridge, sink, cupboards, loads of hanging space for coats, shoe storage and cat beds, the cats are fed in there too so it's out of the way. We haven't got any specific ventilation and building control didn't ask for any. Put plenty of plug sockets in too, we have double sockets in each corner.

Sven, I was literally just returning to this thread for the same comment. Elsewhere on gardening forums I noticed that strong absolute barriers create 'eddies' or fastening twisted wind and so It would need to somehow dissipate/difuse the wind, or as you say two gates or barriers. (Thanks Sven)

Hi Emily no I haven't actually done anything since first posting actually so still really eager for other people's opinions. That is actually the way it was when we viewed the house and I agree with you but it didn't make sense for our lifestyles. We use the dining table to work on the laptops and for sewing and need the daylight from the one window on the left hand side. Also in turn the right hand side is darker and more suitable for movie nights (we have lots). Contrary to the illustration, there are no windows on the wall where the front door is so even the current dining room can be really dark if it is an overcast day

Hi JC. I think the layout of the path will be quite important as well as deciding which plants to have. It looks like there is a lot of footfall on the lawn next to the patio so I think any path needs to start from here. Had you thought what material you’d like the path to be made out of? The size of the borders will depend on what plants you’d like to have, shrubs and trees will most likely need more space and can encroach on your lawn space. The suggestions above are all good tho and most of them are very hardy and tolerant of most soils. For privacy on the right fence I might go fo one main shrub, perhaps a Lilac and a tallish evergreen. If you get young specimens they’ll adapt to the soil better. In the meantime you could attach some trellis to the fence and grow some climbers such as the clematis Montana, honey suckle or star jasmine. I think the way to pick a planting plan is not to rush it but start with your star attractions first, the larger plants, shrubs or trees, look them up and find out their eventual height and spread. Then the rest you can fill in with the smaller things, like the perennials and bulbs. Be sure to check what conditions each plant likes, sun/shade etc. I bought this plant yesterday at a plant fair, Sambucas nigra ‘black lace’. It can grow very large but can be hacked back quite vigorously with little effect and is very hardy. Good job really as my garden isn’t huge and it’s staying in a container:-) Good luck with your garden, it’s a lovely space.

There are edging strips you can lay that are almost invisible. I’ve never used them them so do check reviews.

We’ve used similar edging strips to those mentioned by Sonia. It’s not such an obvious border. As the grass has now grown to the edge, you can’t see the border strips at all. I imagine that would probably also happen with your wood edging & in a month or two it won’t be so obvious.

I forgot to say I really like your wooden edging, it sits well with the bark.

I’ve got the Ever Edge steel edging between the grass and bark where the trampoline sits. Works really well and is hardly noticeable.
