What to do with a big wall + space behind the door

I have a huge wall in my apartment that's pretty much a blank canvas. I would like to put something there but I am not sure what. On top of that I really like minimalistic and simple designs. On top of that there is a space to the side close to the door that seem like a void nothing fits there.

I have been looking online and most people have a wall gallery in places like this but I feel that is too busy for me.

I am completely lost and I need help.

you say you like minimalist but your've got a complicated global rug -- and a poster of the grand tour. How would you feel about a map wall mural -- or something with a global feel?

Thanks Carolin. I love the idea of the ledges but the main issue then would be how to get a lamp to the right hand side of the sofa where it tends to get a bit dark later at night. I'm not sure a floor lamp would look right there, along with the picture ledges, as it would be too close to the door and I'm not sure the perspective of looking at a tall light would work. I do love picture ledges however.

Hi Sonia This sounds like a very exciting project! When renovating, deciding whether to do it all in one go rather than phasing it it almost always driven by budget. With older houses there's usually surprises along the way so be prepared for that. Before you start on the cosmetic changes you should make sure all the bones of the property (electrics, damp proof, heating, plumbing, etc) are in good order as having to rectify this later is more costly if you have to re-do all the cosmetic work. After that I would look at any structural changes you want to make and factor in the time it takes for any planning requirements. After this you can start to focus on flooring, kitchens, decor etc. The best advice I can give you is not to underestimate the amount of planning involved. The more you do upfront before starting any work the smoother the process will be. Renovating is great fun and very rewarding at the end of the journey but it can also be stressful, overwhelming and consumes an enormous amount of your time and energy! It's also very dirty - there's no way around this! Make sure you have the right professionals in place to support you and your project. Good luck!

How deep are the recesses? I don't think that they need to match, especially when you put in free standing wardrobes. Here's two we took apart and made to fit in to our recesses. We splayed the sides out, brought the wardrobe fronts forward and made extra deep wardrobes. They were Art Nouveau, his and hers wardrobes, so were not identical to start with. From the wardrobe front to the back of the recess is about a metre. Lots of storage.

Design rule: Never look at any small space in a room as separate to that space. Design that area into the room. The idea of bringing that area level to top level is ideal. If it cannot 'loadbear' play around with ideas to still do that, but keep weight low. Keep any addition of 'pattern' or proportions to bare minimum and connect that to the greater area. Any single item put there, eg urn will look random, we wd call them 'plonkers', put there because the designer couldnt think what to do with a space. 'Plonked' there. Remember plantpots atop manhole covers on folks' front lawns? The thing put there to cover the manhole cover up, drew your eye to a plonked item. Replace banisters with something to your taste. Do not make yr banisters a curly eye catching feature. You could clad them, or go to reclamation yard, or research banister options.

Here are some ideas:

1. Adding end tables with lamps, or even floor lamps that flank your sofa will help with ambiance. Lamp light is much nicer than overhead lighting and having a place to set a drink is also nice.

2. Move your sofa up so at least the front legs are sitting on the rug. You could add a console table behind your sofa and put some plants on it or decorate with books, or something meaningful to you.

3. Adding a coffee table or ottoman in front of the sofa would also add some interest. It does not have to match your furniture. It could be wood, or metal or glass.

4. If you have the budget for curtains that is an opportunity to add some visual interest as well.

5. You don't need to add a gallery. You can keep the art at "human height" and just do a large piece of art behind your couch. You could hang your other piece (on the floor) over the desk or in another area where it fits better.

I support the idea of side tables on both sides of the sofa (different). Near the door is a minimalist floor lamp. Pillow on the sofa accent. Replace the curtain with a more interesting one. Now I have a night, later I will draw more specifically ..
In front of the sofa, by the way, there may be an ottoman for legs.

A huge piece of morden art and no desk there . 2 end tables some great lamps and for sure a different rug that one is boring . Is that hot water heating or electric ? If hot water do some drapes ideally either the wall color or a color from the new art and rug.Tha rug in no way works with the furniture I think a really cool floor lamp by the door but get the art and the rug first.

I would turn the rug 90 degrees, tuck it under the cabinet in the right lower corner of this photo (assume a TV is over that?), and pull the sofa forward until the rug looks centered. That will leave some space for a long table on the long wall that will (1) hopefully fit into the corner by the door, (2) make a more generously sized desk, and (3) serve as a console table behind the sofa. I have used simple slab doors for this (looks like you would need two), supported by 2-drawer file cabinets (does anyone use file cabinets anymore??) or screwed-on legs or sturdy angle brackets attached to the wall (if you're allowed to do that). You can buy plain doors new for about $60 for 24x80 at HD or Lowe's (available in various widths to fit your corner) or check your local ReStore (although those would generally have doorknob holes, unless they're bifold closet doors, which are often too narrow for a good table). More curtain panels so they look full, a couple of lamps, another poster, and you could call it done for now. (Someday maybe add a coffee table and another living room chair?)

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I have added other pictures of the room from other angles.

I really like to have the desk by the window becuase I spend about 8 hours working there. I open my window and get some distraction and fresh air from outside.

Have you thought about putting the desk right in the center between the windows?

It looks like your very old fashioned windows have hardware for box valences on top. If so, it might look nice to restore them and drop down single drape panels on rings on a rod so that you can push each panel entirely to just one side of each window.

Can you flip the room so that the TV is on the other wall? If not, I would suggest briniging the floor lamp to the left end of the sofa and bringing the chair to that end of the room as well, to centrally face the window (and where I suggest your desk could go).

Now that I see the whole room I realize a wall mural won't work. Do a google search for "board and batten accent wall" and see if anything jumps out at you.

We might suggest trying a plant or two in the void area near the door. Otherwise it looks like you could use some artwork, side tables, floor lamps, and maybe some more chairs. Take a second to look through some of the images below. It might help you with chosing accessories for your space.
