North facing garden on clay soil

I've just extended the rear of my property into our North facing back garden. Our soil is heavy clay and the rear of the house is always really wet. It's not clear if the water is coming from above or above and below, but the rear of the house is never dry.

What would be the best possible rear paving / decking / something else solution to help manage the drainage on my site and give me a usable garden?

You can improve clay soil by adding good quality topsoil and grit by digging it in. One bonus of clay is it is nutritious to plants. The Royal Horticultural Society has lots of info on improving clay soil on their website which may be of interest to you. www.rhs.org.uk.

Hi Stuart,

When you say 'rear of the house is always wet' do you mean inside your new extension or the grounds of your garden?

In my professional opinion, heavy clay soil in shade (North facing) is enough to cause wet grounds. In addition to this, the fact that you had a rear extension done recently might have increased this problem even more due to ground compression (machinery and high footfall during the works) - I see this very frequently. As Sonia pointed out, the RHS has a lot of tips on how to condition clay soil.In your case, incorporating long compost (visible straw) would not only condition the soil, but also help to aerate it and decompact it. When I work with heavy clay gardens, I usually do a combination of selecting plants that can cope with such soil (they do exist, and in your case, they would have to cope with shade as well) to go on the ground with placing in raised beds where I have more freedom on the plant selection (as they bypass the drainage problem). In terms of the paved areas, the preparation and sub bases need to be well done for your type of soil, and I would also focus on permeable paving as much as possible to put less drainage preassure on the beds.

Nice work so far, now for the fun stuff- the planting makes or breaks a project like this. A good garden designer will challenge your ideas and explore the alternatives with you to find the right solution so here goes! It's important to remember that you will be looking out at this view from the windows most of the time so THAT's the most important view. You say south facing, I guess the windows are south facing so anything against that brick wall should not filter out more light and block the view unless you want a more intimate feeling in that space. It's vital to consider the purpose of the planting along the brick wall. I'd ask you why you want trees there? The wall is attractive but do you need more screening from your neighbours? One way to add screening is to add a top trellis with cllmbers - you control EXACTLY the height and have no issues with the wall being damaged to the tree becoming too large. The requirements for planting can then be fulfilled by filling the border with structural shrubs and a good variety of shade tolerant perennials. Fatsia japonica is a versatile shrub with large, glossy hand-shaped leaves borne on stout, upright stems. This architectural shrub is surprisingly hardy, and copes well with coastal conditions and shady areas of the garden. Fatsia plants make an eye-catching feature in borders or large patio containers. Okay being a sunny spot means you can grow a lot more. Vigorous climbers that are beautiful are Clematis Montana (my previous first pic) and Rambler Roses, Honeysuckle, Jasmine (Jasminum officinale) and Pyracantha. Climbing Roses and other forms of Clematis are less vigorous but great fillers. All will need tying in and training but no real hardship. You can read up about sun loving climbers on the RHS website. Many of these plants have gorgeous scents as well, especially the Honeysuckle and Jasmine. Wisteria is a stunning winding plant that needs to be thoroughly tied in, but it is gorgeous. Thank you for your suggestion regarding the house layout. We really like what you've done to maximise the space downstairs and to include our room requirements in your thinking. We love the utlity area, with an additional nooks for coats etc. and the sizeable pantry off the kitchen. Definitely a good idea to incude plumbing, where we play to put to palyroom because eventually we could see this turned into an additional bedroom for elderly relatives. The re-shuffle of the upstairs space is clever, to minimse cost e.g. with the en-suite bathroom for the master bedroom. I prefer what you've done with the two smaller rooms, by including a doormer whould make the space more useable...and one of the rooms could still become an office. Questions: - by installing roof lights in the downstairs extension, do you feel that would be sufficient light for the ktichen space? Very concious to not make the middle space of the downstairs too dark? Thanks again - blown away by what you've produced!

Thank you (both) for your well thought out responses. I agree that compaction may be a major contributor to our problems after the building works. The garden receives very heavy footfall and so compaction and moisture are a major problem close to the house. Even in the height of summer, the ground at the back of the house remains muddy and wet.

My feeling is that I need to manage drainage on site as much as possible (the ground is on a slope across the garden) and possibly create a composite deck across the back of the house to minimise footfall, coupled with a broad path along one side of the lawn or down the middle.
