Design Dilemma Living Rooms

We are renovating our living room and looking for ideas on the layout please. We are thinking of blocking up the patio doors and having a modern fire on the wall with the tv wall mounted beside it. We don’t want to have the tv above the fire. We will be changing the furniture, carpet, internal doors and skimming the ceiling so open to any layout ideas! Excuse the kids’ toys!

I’m not an expert but blocking in the patio doors seems a bit extreme, don’t you think? You seem to have a nice outlook there. You could put a sofa in front of them if that’s any help?

I agree with Sonia, I’d be worried about loss of light, view and garden access.

Is this the sort of thing you’re after?

Would you consider having a single door from the hall (perhaps moving it too, not sure how accurate the plan is) and having an electric fire on that wall?

Is keeping access to the dining room also a must?

A couple of options:- I'd put the games table in the study as for me personally it has no place in the lounge / dining area and should be out of the way in a separate room. With the games table out of the way, you have more room for seating in the lounge area & the conservatory, which can then be opened up for larger gatherings :-

Carolina, thank you, you give so much time to thas - it has given us loads to think about. We really would need to get used to the room being divided by the sofa though. We have had it that way but it made the room very small and squashed,feeling we were all sitting so close to the fire and the rest of the room unused. I have also had two 3 seater sofas coming out from the fireplace, facing each other, with a table between. I liked that as it opened the room up and it felt 'social', my partner liked it less because of difficulty viewing the tv. At the minute Ring the sofas form more of an L shape, on the wall to the left and the wall facing the windows. With the TV between the windows we can all watch TV and see the fire, without sitting behind each other. The open space is great. The downside of this layout is that if as a family we are sitting on both sofas some people can't see each other so conversation is difficult. Another thought for me was 2 of the Harrington chaise sofas - as one would fit in front of the window and stretch into the alcove beside the fire, the other would sit facing the TV and wouldn't stick out beyond the wall where the door is. This would be great for seeing each other and talking. There would still be space for 2 chairs or a sofa on the left hand wall. Unfortunately for good family time, the compromise might have to be 'looks'.

How wide is the bay? (Not convinced the plan is entirely accurate if the previous people had a sofa on the left wall?). Ignore the furniture choice, was trying to find photos at the right angle! I might do something like this. You may also be able to have another chair on the left wall. If you go for an upholstered footstool you have more seating when needed and I’d choose a low back sofa so it’s not poking over the top of the window sill. If you don’t want the sofa to impose on the room too much, choose a colour that doesn’t contrast with the walls too much. Perhaps choose a rug that is large enough for all of the front feet of the furniture to sit on. You can always use masking tape to mark out the exact size of furniture.

Agree not to block the patio doors. It’s a great source of light and lovely view to the garden. Rather, block the doors to the dining room and utilise that as your main wall for the TV and fire. Those fires can be fitted low or at floor level which will allow you to have the TV at the right level.
