Window frame repair

Hi! Who repaired the old windows? I want to renovate the house, but I see that the window frame is rotten. I do not know what to do. Restore old windows or buy new ones

Some joiners and carpenters specialise in windows. When I was an inexperienced first time buyer I thought my windows were falling apart. A super joiner methodically went around each window and explained what needed doing….. it actually was nowhere near as much as I thought.

Replacement windows are not always necessary and in many cases are undesirable as the originals are more sought after

Agreed with Jonathan. you can patch repair wooden frames and you can also have double glazed units replaced or fitted into existing frames. If you have sash windows there are companies that specialise in repairing them. We had new double glazed sashes fitted to our renovated original wooden frames.

Hello Emmeline, I have black and a dark charcoal in the kitchen .. In the living room it's black and then a kind of greyish mauve which I make myself.. Most of the woodwork is painted with a colour I made myself.. My front door is charcoal by fired earth.. It's lovely with brass hardware.. :))

Hi edwardaston, I would suggest restoring them again, and again, and again. Have they been draught proofed? Double glasing them is a one way street as the originals will be lost for ever. The traditional sashes are typically made from pitch pine (much better than the modern softwoods) so the materials are incomparable. DGU's (double glased units) also have a nasty habbit of misting up before their time, especially in a sash scenario. I'd put this down to the vulnerability of the DGU edge in a sash / putty. This makes for a disposable future ahead for these windows. Balance becomes an expensive factor involving lead make weights or out right replacement of the weights all together. Pulleys should be upgraded at the time as you'll near double the weight of the sashes. I also would not suggest modifying old sashes to take slim DGU's.. Avoid DGU all together and maybe get some nice roman blinds to keep you warmer.

We have had this done. We used a company called NW Window Repairs We were so thrilled with the results on the old dark 'wood' upvc windows that we had the utility room door, the garage door and the conservatory all done to match. So far it's been around 18 months, no complaints or scratches / weathering and comes with a great guarantee. Less than a third of what we were quoted for replacement windows too!Conservatory was bog standard white and we went for ral beige green not sure what number! The windows were a dark wood look.

I'd definitely recommend a pale mint green colour or a similar hue of grey/slate, they look so refreshed and I think with your brickwork they would work beautifully! Especially if you went for the same garage doors also! You have a beautiful space out front so it would really benefit from a refreshing, modern yet still characterful look! My neighbour had their large 1930s wooden bay window repaired where necessarily and then painted it and it lasted a few more years. They have replaced it now with a upvc one.
