How can I add a tall cabinet and make my kitchen look cohesive

I’ve removed a shower room from the dining room and am adding a small extension to the side (the brown window will now be a door that swings into the new extension which will be a small toilet. )

This has left a gap of 180cm in the kitchen. I have bought an integrated fridge and am ordering a cabinet for it but I don’t know what colour it should be to make it cohesive. I can’t get the cabinet from the supplier of the other cabinets - so I don’t want it to be cream as it might be a shade different and look odd.

What colour would you make the cabinet?
What else would you add to the empty space?

I would see if any local suppliers have a sample door you can take away to see if it is the same shade

Hi Patricia, I come across this problem a lot, I match the colour samples in the studio and they work perfectly. When we take them to site the lighting in the room totally changes the look of the colour pallets we chose. Lesson one for us, "always" put the colour samples in the room before agreeing them with the client. Lighting is the single most important factor with pastel colours. If its a north facing room colours will always look dull. Due to the position of the window the units under the window will always be in shadow which neutralises the blue tones and brings out the grey. Two ways of approaching this. 1 Re paint with a stronger blue to offset the neutralising effects of the lighting. 2 Change the lighting. Put an extension into the room and get a few different lights, LED warm white, Soft white, brilliant while etc. Look at the effects in the day and in the evening. When you find the light source that brings out the blue tones use that on all the lights in the room... With regards to colour on the walls, at the risk of being boring I always go white. When you put white up against a pastel colour the pastel shades really pop out. When you put another colour in it alters / distracts from the pastel. Hope that helps, Martin: www.angel-martin.com

Personally I think that the issue is that the pebbledashed section is too plain and this is exacerbated by the fact that the roof here is higher than the original plan. In my opinion the solution is to create some visual interest in this area. If both you and your neighbour is replacing the porch a taller version might help. Personally I think the pebbledash looks like a lower quality product than the rest of the house and painting it would help lift it (as long as the neighbour also want to do it as half done would look worse). Ideally I would put a tall thin sash style window in the pebbledashed section but I recognise this might be inconvenient inside the house- but it could be faked by adding a window surround to the outside to match the stone on the bay.

Liking the eclectic look! You do have a fair amount of furniture in the space, but I think with the look you’re going for it can work well, its just learning how to work with it. I don’t think it looks cluttered at all. At present, besides the furniture, the room is fairly simple and so your eyes are mostly drawn to all the furniture. I’m thinking if you add in some accessories here and there, it will help to create interest and change the focus. It’s a great way to tie everything in together without using an area rug. For example, adding some feature wall art above the sofa, whether that be one stand alone piece or a cluster of a few. Or how about adding a nice red throw over the sofa to tie in with the red chair? Adding plants/flowers on top of furniture are always great options as others have suggested. Your oval footstool is a lovely piece. Maybe you could add a tray on it with some accessories on? In terms of creating more storage, maybe you could have a think about open shelves and find some interesting ways to display your items. But the bookcase is lovely too! I suppose it really depends how much storage you need. They’re just some initial thoughts. I won’t be offended if you don’t like!

If you are keeping the green backsplash, that would be a good choice for integrated fridge cabinet - I'd install as many tall cabinets as possible to fill that space and have them all in the green so that it creates a green block of cabinetry - one tall cabinet in a different colour will look quite odd, but a block filling the whole space will look much more intentional.

I think if the whole wall was the same colour it would look more cohesive, so I personally would look for similar creams. A lot of kitchen companies do have small samples of the door colours which may be easier to transport around. I bet the creams aren’t too dissimilar. I bought a retro fridge in cream which luckily matched my cream units pretty well.
