Design Dilemma - Living room, caught in two minds.
Comments (15)I think you're not far off the look you want but, you're right, there are a few tweaks to tie it together. Mainly paint, so only a weekend, maybe two, depending on how handy you are with a brush! I would paint the black blue, and lose the gold frame moulding in the centre of the ceiling (it brings the ceiling down, visually). Love the blue chandelier, keep it! Is that a radiator to the right of the door? If yes, I'd paint it gold to match the skirting (it would also look more Victorian). If you have the budget, you could get it replaced with a vintage style cast iron radiator? They are quite expensive though, so maybe something to save up for down the line? I'd also paint the entry door blue, with a gold frame, to tie everything in together - I think the stark white block in the wall jars with the rest of the room. As per other contributors to this thread, I agree that you need a rug, ideally a dark coloured Kilim or Turkish style rug, going by your inspiration photos. IKEA do some that are very affordable, but you could splash out on a handmade one. If you can find a battered and worn secondhand one, I think would look awesome, it would give you that lived in Victorian look? Finally, the chairs and table are cool, and the colours work for me, but the table is way to small for the space. Perversely, I think it actually makes the room look smaller? I would switch to a six seater, and turn it 90 degrees to how you have it at the moment (pointing toward the fireplace). It does look awesome, and do please keep us posted!...See Moreliving room dilemma
Comments (3)Leather is good as a wipe-clean option if you have kids for example but generally I'm not so keen. Leather will naturally wear/crease wherever someone sits the most so they won't stay looking good for as long as other fabric sofa's. They can also get very hot and sweaty to sit in when its warm. I would also suggest getting a nice large rug to soften off all the hard tile underfoot!...See MoreLiving room paint dilemma
Comments (15)I've just come back from a chum's house who wanted decor help. I'm not a professional in any way, shape or form, but she likes the way I've decorated my house and wanted my input. Her current sitting room has a long feature wall papered in deep red, with cream walls on the other walls. The red is dark and light sapping so glad it is going. She has bought curtains and wallpaper in a white/grey/green/lemon country style design. She needed help choosing a nice neutral for the rest. We finally chose Dulux Polished Pebble (a pale grey with a tiny hint of green). I also liked Dulux Swansdown, an even paler grey which was my preferred one. Maybe have a look at these two? You have quite a lot of elements going on so I would stick with something pale and neutral. I love the fireplace as it is by the way!...See MoreLiving Room and Dining Room Decor
Comments (18)Hi Tim, greys are easy on the eye so they make a great base shade for rooms - on floors, walls, curtains or fabrics - plus they suit both period and contemporary schemes. The hue works well in any interior – it looks sophisticated in living rooms, it makes bedrooms feel soothing and creates a welcoming space in entrances. Have you considered teaming a grey carpet to match with the walls? From barely there silvers that wield a gentle touch – think Cormar’s Sensation’s Cape Diamond – to foggy greys that offer a timeless look (Highland Saxony in Baltic Grey) and deep charcoals (Sensation Twist in Charcoal) for a dramatic splash, there is a shade of grey to suit everyone. We’d also recommend sampling, to see how a particular colour matches in the rest of the décor. You can see and feel how the colour and texture work in the room and, very importantly, in the lighting.
