Alternative bathroom layouts?

New on here and would really appreciate some inspiration with our family bathroom we are trying to remodel.
Current layout is attached (with separate bath and shower) but it doesn't really work for us as feels very pokey and there is no surface to use for toothbrushes etc.
So we're thinking of combining the bath and shower and then using the extra space to have more of a vanity unit (current thinking attached). However we seem to be stuck with the toilet facing the door which isn't ideal. Are we missing an option here?
We've been working on the basis we need the toilet backing onto an outside wall for ease of plumbing (it's already prone to blocking!) and there are pipes in the cupboard that will have to stay in that location.

Hi Jayne,

We have just last week helped someone who was also struggling with the layout in their bathroom. We had a video call with her to discuss the possible layouts and bounce around ideas. This was all done during our Power Hour. We do not design bathrooms but we can suggest an overall concept and look at things like tiles and decorative accessories. Gina, I'm not really sure why i put it there to be honest!! The suggestion to locate the shower as shown on Jonathan's plan obviously makes much more sense! Some of my design thought was based on me thinking the toilets would need to be on the same wall so as to use the same soil pipe, not sure if this is just my incorrect logic though!??? Jonathan, I understand what you are saying about incorporating the cupboard space into bedroom 3 but if you remember back the plan (see below) was to create a study/bedroom from the hallway, old wc and landing cupboard. It wouldn't be possible to do this if we divided bedroom 3 into two rooms as they'd be no access to the far bedroom. Your plan would leave me with no more bedrooms than i have now and with a smaller bed 3. We could of course incorporate the cupboard space into bed 3 rather than the bathroom, making it an even bigger room but I'm slightly reluctant to as this room is one that has been finished.

You absolutely have room for a wetroom - If everything is splashproof, imagine the shower without the quadrant enclosure, and a tanked floor with a couple of drain points. Try to avoid too much chrome in the splash zone as it watermarks. Bath, basin, loo etc smooth and white with no nooks/crannies for easy wiping down. We have an old school towel rail in ours, next to the shower, and the chrome does watermark so needs the odd polish. here are some pics of our master bathroom. 3m x 2m, admittedly with no loo in it. We could have fitted a loo had we made the shower zone a bit smaller and zoned with a clear screen as suggested above, but were lucky enough to have a separate WC.

You should add a sketch of floor plans, that will help everyone visualise it better. This isn't what you want to hear, but we decided to keep the toilet separate from the shower room for a couple of reasons - more flexibility - someone in the shower doesn't prevent someone else going to the loo. And hygiene reasons - I don't like the thought of our toothbrushes sitting out beside the loo. We added a small wash hand basin to the loo room as it didn't have one originally (and a new loo). In the bathroom we took out the bath and replaced with a bath-sized shower and also added double sinks so kids can brush teeth at same time. Obviously neither room is huge but they both function well and they don't feel too small actually. Generally though I'd say have the door into the middle of the bathroom so that you walk into the circulation space for all the different uses - so I'd close the door to the toilet and have sink straight ahead between toilet and bath. That also ensures that you don't see the toilet as soon as you walk into the room, which is something best avoided if possible.

Have you thought about leaving toilet and sink where they are and having the bath turned the other way at the top right corner, with the shower opposite in the new space that is being created? Get a shorter bath if necessary to fit the space - big baths are a waste of space and water and shorter baths are more comfortable unless someone in the house is really tall. Then the narrowest section of walkway is between shower and bath which I think is fine rather than it being narrow to come into. I'd also rather hang my towel on the side of the bath ready for coming out of the shower than anywhere near the toilet - I like toilets to be kept at a distance! Not having to move soil stack will save money and the 'long view' into the room will be bath rather than toilet.

Thanks very much all - these are really helpful. I really like the extra storage it would give (and also love that shower screen!)

Thanks for the offer of support Becky - I'm afraid that's a bit out of our budget at the moment!

The only thing I would add is to centralise the bath on the wall and use this as storage. Raise the radiator. I dislike dead space where spiders hide😉
