Lighting on ornamental ceiling

So this area will become an open kitchen & dinning room area once the wall on the right hand side is knocked down. I am just unsure if it will look good to put low profile white spot lights around the central coving?
What is best to provide maximum lighting here?

It is a beautiful period room. You would need to provide the style of kitchen & dining room that you are planning. Colours influence lighting too. If you are keeping the period features then I am not a fan of spotlights. You can get beautiful pendants and some really classical wall lights which would be much softer. Do lots of research.Devol and Plain English both have inspiring websites. Inigo a property website has a lot of period properties for ideas. Concealed lighting like undercounter would be softer too.

Hi. Hard to tell from the photos but it looks like it’s made from ceramic, most likely a studio pottery and handmade. The light fitting itself looks like a standard indoor one, you can tell because of the switch on the cable. For outdoor use you would need a different kind of fitting. Tried to find one similar with no joy. You could perhaps get one made on commission tho if you have any pottery studios near by. Looks fairly easy to do and an earthen ware glaze would look great on it.

Hi KB, Yes this sounds great for the kitchen so that you have focused task lighting for the prep area and the dining area. In regards to the living area I would always suggested softer more indirect lighting as this will create a softer more relaxed ambience. Opt for wall lights, free standing lamps and table lamps all with LED warm temperature bulbs. If you do want to add a central ceiling light i would definitely recommend adding a dimmer too so the lighting level can be changed to suit the time of day. A picture of the room would help, or a link to the video if possible. With regard to the shade of blue, I stalked a decorater round my local paint store while he was talking on the phone to his client trying to persuade her to go for Little Greenes Bone China Blue Faint in her bathroom against her white porcelain bathroom suite. He didn’t suceed but I liked it so much I’m going to use it in my bathroom. Given your reference to Wedgewood I think it could look amazing with light oak and brass curtain poles, etc. The paint colour comes in four different depths depending on how light or dark you want to go.

I’m not a big fan of downlights but they’re often a must for bathrooms/kitchens, you could combine with wall lights/pendants either side of a mirror. By recessed shelves, do you mean a niche for toiletries etc? If so, I’d say they are extremely handy and not dated

lovely space, first thing would be to try to avoid doing too much if anything with that lovely ceiling, I would also assume with the age of the property that will be a lathe and plaster ceiling which can be very tricky to install anything into.

When we light a space like this we try to avoid downlights if we can and look at bouncing and reflecting light off of surfaces, we want to bring as much of the natural light into the space too through those wonderful windows.

Find a really stunning statement pendant for the middle of the ceiling to celebrate it, and find a fitting which gives you upward light as well as downward light to bounce the light off the ceiling and really illuminate that stunning detail, ideally your pendant would have separately controllable light sources in it - one up lighting element one downlighting element.

Think about introducing a low level 5a circuit for lose lighting and maybe integrate some lighting to highlight the wonderful fireplace too.

Just found this thread - what a beautiful ceiling. How's the renovation going? Have you taken the wall down? I agree strongly with Isla and James about not using spot lights/downlights. I notice that you said you want maximum lighting. There are lighting products that can help you make that space bright and light without spot lights but would need to see the layout, furniture, colour scheme and design to make any worth while suggestions. I will say, consider slim, unobtrusive floor lamps to throw lots of light onto that stunning ceiling for indirect lighting and yes, a statement chandelier hanging from that stunning ceiling rose would be a win. Just need to watch the canopy dimensions to make sure it fits in nicely.
