kitchen incorporating air fryer

Does anybody have an opinion about incorporating an air fryer onto existing kitchen counter top. Do you have one? Is it worth it? Do you regret giving up the space for one? I am thinking about purchasing a Tower 7.6ltr 2 drawer but am worried I will regret losing quite a bit of countertop space.

I have the Ninja 400 dual drawer and also the Ninja 500 Flexmachine. They sit next to each other on my worktop but I have a decent sized kitchen. I know from various Facebook air fryer sites that I subscribe to that some people who have been short on space have purchased standalone stands on which they’ve placed the air fryer and a freestanding microwave. This might be an idea for you?
Personally being able to use an air fryer beats the small lack of worktop space. I haven’t used my main oven in 2 years.

Hello. My utility was converted from half a large garage at the front of the house and my kitchen is at the back. It honestly works perfectly! Used for all stuff from the kitchen (which keeps my kitchen clutter free also) like baking stuff, air fryers etc that I don't use every day, all cleaning stuff, Hoover, laundry and also a cupboard to function as a cloak space. We had a similar problem. Had two rads and two plinth heaters, but they weren't working properly and we were freezing. Had the plumber in and he adjusted them and now we're toasty in a matter of minutes. Get one plinth heater put in and plug in a small electric coal or log effect stove ( cheap enough) to bridge the gap. If your windows are thermally bridged have you thought about contacting the window installer to complain , about the problems you are having? The builder, too , as he should have ensured your extension was properly insulated. The suggestion about thermal lined curtains that pull right back during the day is spot on as it will help insulate the room and the kitchen will be warmer in the mornings to come down to. Finally the door is essential as both the hall and front door area are most likely sucking away any warmth from the kitchen area, especially if there is a stairwell. I now think if I was doing mine again I would dig up the floor and put in underfoot heating but this is way too disruptive to consider now. Best of luck.

Ikea Kitchens are excellent, the attention to quality is superb. Lots of suppliers only offer doors in particular sizes, which is why when you go to an appointment at Wickes for example and you then take it to Howdens, they often have to swap the cabinets around as they don't all do all the sizes. Factoring in that you may want to change the doors in a few years at this point is in my opinion daft. You buy a kitchen and it should last 10-15 years. Magnet and Howdens offer great kitchens too. However, I have personal experience of fitting an Ikea Kitchen last year and was very impressed. I've used Howdens several times too. There are many companies however, that offer custom sizes when ordering replacements such as Kitchen door workshop and Kitchen Door Outlet to name but two. Saying that you can't replace the doors, just simply isn't accurate.

Your project plan is very similar to the project we did in Esher few years ago, please have a look at Esher project. I would suggest incorporating sliding doors to utility room, it’s more functional and cleaner look and creates more space for utility room. The island will be great feature in your kitchen. The size of the island in Esher project is 1.600mm x 2.400mm, sittings for 4 people, consist of 3 units 800mmm x 600mm. In Ailsa Road Twickenham project the size of the island is 1.400 mm x 2.400 mmm for 6 people. I would recommend the lighting above the island (as in Alisa Road project), bright and dimmable LED lights, as your space will require lots of clever lighting, At this stage I would suggest getting free 3D AutoCAD design of your desired kitchen which can be adjusted with your requirements , it will help you both on visualisation of your future family space. I can’t help thinking they are an ugly bit of tat to clutter your worktop. Yes they are slightly cheaper to run than the oven you already have - but assuming you are like most people and buy a £100 model, and assuming you buy big (just in case) and assuming the electricity saving is £18 a year over an oven- you need to run it for over five years to recoup the purchase cost. I don’t understand why people think they are such an economy!

I’ve just given mine away. It was a smaller Ninja and it took up too much counter space (my kitchen is a galley kitchen and not huge) and it wasn’t big enough to feed even 2 people. Now it’s gone I’ve got a bit more worktop space, which is very welcome. I find a conventional much more convenient and you can get loads in there. I’ve noticed there are lots of secondhand ones for sale on Marketplace which says it all!

It’s definitely not tat and they’re becoming more and more popular. It’s not just to do with economics. People sell them and upgrade or never bother to learn how to use them correctly.

It’s a different way of cooking and far healthier with no oils. I had to have a cholecystectomy operation and while awaiting the operation had to have no fatty food, deep fried food or food cooked in oils, therefore an air fryer was my choice and I have definitely never regretted it. I have stuck to the same no fat choice of food because it still doesn’t suit my digestive system.

Cakes cooked in it are much more moist than a traditional oven as is meat.

The Flexmachine has a divider that you can take out and use one massive drawer to cook big joints of meat. It’s a winner for me.

Just to add balance to the conversation:-
Air fryers use less oil than conventionally frying something with a frying pan with oil. You can however just cook with less fat with the non stick frying pan you already own or you can get a fryer basket for your normal oven and given this is less than a tenner it makes Daisys £500 Ninja investment look expensive.

There is no reason why cakes or meat would be better in an air fryer unless your main oven is working poorly. Almost everyone has a fan in their oven to circulate heat and so it’s the same effect as the air fryer- the main oven having the benefit of having a larger cooking space to accommodate larger cakes and joints meaning there air circulation is better for more even results - the smaller air fryers often get the criticism that because their limited capacity means they are often filled to capacity they don’t always cook evenly (because of insufficient circulation).

If cooking with an air fryer works for you then I’m not against it - I’m just saying that some of the marketed benefits of cost, or results, or fat content are questionable.

Thanks Jonathan for your informative and balanced information. Intuitively I can’t help but think that it is more expensive and wasteful to preheat and cook in a whole oven - especially as I am mostly cooking one dish for 2 people. But you have given me food for thought (forgive the pun!)

If you preheat your oven for 10 minutes that cost 15p and that means years to recoup the acquisition cost. Now in fairness your 20 minute meal might cost 13p less to cook …… but if your air fryer isn’t big enough and you cook a second batch then any saving is wiped out.

I can’t see an economic reason for buying an air fryer

A fad, tat, or indispensable? It all depends! I have a 3.2l airfryer, cost me £29.99(!), and it’s brilliant. It’s at my workplace, and means I can cook all manner of delicious hot lunches, speedily. It’s especially economical because I don’t have to go to the local cafe to get something warm to eat. I can roast up a piece of fish, or make a shakshuka from scratch in the time it would take a normal oven to heat up. But it would be awkward to cook well for more than one person with an airfryer this small. And would I have a bigger airfryer out on the worktop at home? Er, no.

I have been tempted to buy one at times but I’ve also done some very rough maths and have come to the same conclusion as Jonathan. I also don’t have much spare cupboard space to keep one hidden. However - I have now also become way more conscious of what I’m using my oven for, and I’m now often batch cooking or cooking several different things at the same time. This new mindset is saving me money in electricity and also a lot of time.

Love air fryers! Bought a barely used second hand Tower for £20 to try it out. After a year my pressure cooker packed up and I found a barely used instant pot for £30. Sold the tower for £10 and combined my two bulky gadgets into one… I use both several times a week. I keep it in a cupboard though.
I agree with the savings being more theoretical if you’ve had to shell out a lot for the air fryer.
